Unfortunately, the 531 does not find roots of a function. However, the 506 calculator has something called equation mode, where you can
find roots of equations.

First you have to set the calculator in STAT mode, presumably Standard Deviation or SD. The display should show a STAT annoucer to the top. To enter values use the key M+ (or the key next to which is marked DATA. The screen displays the number of data values entered so far.
To get the statistics you must use the keys marked with x bar, n, Sigma x, etc.
