Dell dimension 2400(5 yrs old) power button

My power button hardly works after I unplug it from the wall before a storm (yes it's off when I do that) I have to mess w/ it a bunch and push the button in slowly until it engages the green lights and you can hear the unit power up. Is there an easy fix or can I jumper around the button and wire it direct to by pass the problem and use the surge power strip as an on?

I would be greatfull for an advise re: this

Thanks,

Jim

You can trace back the wires from the power switch back to the motherboard circuit board. the leads which attach to the wires from the power switch can be disconnected from the power switch and manually shorted briefly with a screwdriver or such, and this will turn the computer on or off..

you should never use the switch to turn the computer off, you should shut windows down to turn the pc off.

Sounds like a power supply issue to me. I have worked with Dell Dimension 2400's before and I have had to change the power supplies on them. This is the typical problem when you have the problem you are having. There is no way to jumper around this unless you go into the BIOS which on Dell is hitting F2 on boot up and going into the BIOS and then go to the power section, then find the setting for restore on power loss to last state or something like that depending on the BIOS type. That might work but I would still suggest checking the power supply. If you call Dell and tell them your problem normally they will send you a power supply tester to test the power supply to make sure that is the problem. Then you can replace it or you can pay them to replace it if you don't know how. Hope this helps.

My dimension 2400 wont turn on it has a green light on the motherboard but wont boot up please help

What you can do is to try to open the casing and remove all the connections specifically the cables/connections from the power supply. Reconnect the cables and try it again. if still not, reconnect the memory modules and disconnect the connection/cable of the hard drive and give it a try. If that works, just do the same process and reconnect the cable back.

Note :
Ensure to unplug the computer first from the power before doing this. Once you have unplugged the computer from the power, press and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds. this will discharge all the remaining power that is stored on the capacitor.

Hope that works..
Happy TS...!

Dell 4600 won't power up following lightning storm. PSU and power button both test OK. Suggestions please! many thanks

Check everything between the power supply and the wall outlet. If everything else is working using the same power a part of your computer is fried.

I have a dell dimension 2400 desktop. The green light goes out and an amber one comes on. The screen then goes black and I can not use the power button to reboot. I have to unplug everythhing and then it...

You most likely need to reinstall windows. Insert your windows cd or dvd into your disc drive and then reboot the computer. Make sure you backup any of your important files first.

Where is the hard drive in the dimension 2400 dell. I see the cd drives, the power supply, the cooling fan, the heatsink, the video card, the memories... so where is the hard drive?

You know the power button in the front? If you open the cover to see the insides, there is the HD that is kind of covered by a metal slot (has like holes...). Well, the HD is right next to the power button in the front, but inside.... Here is a picture. The wires are attached to the HD. yup.

Dell Dimensions 2400 Primary Drive 0 Not Found

For this problem it only means that the Hard Disk of the computer is not being detected

Try doing the ff:
  • reseat the IDE or SATA cable of the Hard Disk
  • Clean the port where the cable is connected (make sure that the computer is unplug)
  • reboot the computer

Switch would not power

Most likely the power supply has gone bad.
Try unplugging it from the wall and then plugging it in again.
Next, open the box and disconnect all drives (hard drives and CDs).
Now try it. Does it start? If so, you most likely have a bad CD.
You can also remove the video card and try it. I usually do this thing in stages, eliminating each piece of hardware one at a time.
When you are down to just the CPU and memory and it still doesn't start, it's most likely the motherboard.
