I keep receiving a "Change Drum Soon" message on the Brother MFC 8220 printer that I use at work. I have changed the toner, but I still receive this message. Printer also leaves skid marks all over the print and fax copy.

OK
Here's what you do if the drum counter was not reset when you replaced the drum. To reset the drum counter, follow the instructions listed below.

  1. Open the front cover.
  2. Press the Options key on the control panel.
The display will show "REPLACE DRUM - 1.YES 2.NO".
  3. Press 1 to reset the drum count.
  4. Close the front cover.

Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

My brother mfc-8220 printer does not want to print. the drum was broken and i replaced it and the toner but yet i hear a grinding sound followed by an error message saying paper jam. I removed the paper...

it might be that the drum replaced is tighter or the space to pass with in the drum is less. friend did u replace the drum of a same model and same type?

Brother MFC-8220 leaving ink on printed docs. How do you clean that?

That's usually a bad toner cartridge that dumps too much toner per print. Buying a new toner cartridge should fix it. You may need to wipe up a little spilled toner inside. Just use a dry cloth, and be very careful around the little black levers that stick up to detect the paper.

There are other manufacturers who sell toner for these, but some of them have toner inside that's so hard to stir, it breaks the gear in the machine. That makes a very expensive repair for the little money you save on generic toner.
