It is the air conditioning unit/ fan. When this is left on you can sometimes hear a knocking noise because the bolts have worn down...a common fault with meganes
This could be many things tell me where do you think it is coming
It`s the timing belt ticking it`ll adjust itself over time, meganes use oil driven tappets and take a little while to warm up so will be a bit tapety when cold.

I have a 1998 renault megane and when I turn the key (i don't even have
to start the engine) i get this intermittent knocking sound from the
dash board. It is 3 knocks every ten seconds..The only way I can
describe it is as 2 light knocks and then the 3rd one sounds the same
way the glove compartment would sound if you opened it and let it
drop...It then stops for ten seconds before starting again.Does anyone
know what this could be?
It comes from the passenger side dash..at first i thought it was in the glove box but it appears to be above thebattery near where the wiper electrics are...
