I want to thank you for teaching me also how download the manual. What I read was that I need to use a s-vhs TAPE where as I have been using a hs-vhs, I will go buy a different cassette tape and I think that will fix the problem. I would not have know that if I didn't download the manual like you did' so I think it will be OK when I put in the proper tape

    thank you so much

Hi Diane,
Just downloaded the manual for your vcr it says:

1 Press menu

2 press up/down arrows to Function Set then press ok

3 press channel up/down arrows to Auto picture then press Ok or shuttle plus right arrow to set to on or off when using rental tapes set either to on or off to give the best picture

4 to return to normal press menu

For recording

1 load a cassette make sure the tab on the cassette is intact if not put some cellotape over the hole

2 set channel press up/down arrows then press enter

3 select tape speed sp/ep

4 press and hold rec and press play on remote or just press record on unit

5 to pause recording (cut out ads) press pause on remote to continue again press play

6 to stop recording just press the stop button

hope this helps and reflects in my feedback lol all the best

My zenith 4head vcr works, then stops

When a VCR encounters a mechanical problem, the electronics will stop playback and shut it down. I suspect that fault has developed in the mechanism and that the tape becomes jammed. The only way to find out it to take off the top cover and watch what happens when the video tape is played.

No imaged when played VCR

It's probably muck on the head. A good quality cleaning tape should get it off. Though for best results take the top cover off and spray all the parts the tape touches, but especially the big head, with Servisol Video 40. Leave to dry before trying the tape. You might have to spray the head several times to clear stubborn dirt. It will be harder to clean if it has been in the house of someone who smokes.

Video on my Sony VCR (SLV-780HF) goes gray after playing a tape a few seconds. What could be the problem?

The only real cure will be to clean the video head. If that doesn't work then I'm afraid that whatever recorded you EP mode tape was not set up well tracking wise. So other machines struggle to track the tape. Some VCR's will only playback SP or LP tapes and don't have EP mode. In which case you should check to see if these VCR's can play the EP tape and if they can't find one that can.

Why does the jvc hr-s3800u shut off after about 8 seconds of tape play

It could be a tape end sensor problem, take up reel is not working, or a idler assembly issue.

My VCR won't play my movies! The tapes are fine its just when I put the tape in it just shows a scraggly screen. Everything is plugged in but my movies won't play. What do I do?

If the vcr is running the tape, your video head is probably dirty, try using a cleaning tape if you have one. The second option is use a brand new blank tape T120 and set the the machine to sp speed (2hr running time) and let the tape run the full course. The third option is to remove the lid of the vcr and carefully clean the video head with a swab dipped in rubbing alcohol rotating the head by hand as you proceed allowing several minutes to dry before loading your tape.

Tv/digital converter box & vcr-dvd hook-up

I have a vhs and dvd player all in one
I have a converter box hooked up to my tv and vcr , dvd player combined
I can play my movies on the tv. ok.
you have to have your tv and vcr set on channel 3. if that is what your main tv is set up with. Or 4 if you have your tv set up with that.
Mine plays ok. My settings are for channel 3
My suggestion would be to check your hook ups. maybe they are not hooked up correctly
I had to go to and did searches to help with hook up.
I can also record station I am watching with vcr on vsh tapes. I do not have a dvd recorder.
I found out that you have to have 2 converter boxes hooked to one tv., in order to record on on station while watching another. I have not tried that, as I don't have 2 converter boxes for one tv. I found that by doing google search also. Good Luck

Seinfeld DVD episodes won't play

It is probably not your VCR. If it is only the Seinfeld DVD's then the format that the production company wrote on those few episodes are incompatible with your vcr. I know I'm not solving your problem much, but don't go waste money on a brand new Vcr when not needed.

Tapes not in 24p play for 2 seconds than stop, WHY?

The BR-DV3000 DV deck has LP inhibit function which is set in the operations menu. JVC does not recommend the use of LP mode and therefore locks this mode out by default. You can change this setting to allow operation in LP mode if you like but I don't recommend it. Using LP mode on DV tape causes the error rate to escalate due to the narrower track width produced by the slow moving tape. Good Luck, this is a nice machine! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (
