Question about HP z540 Digital Entertainment Center PC Desktop

1 Answer

No power too PC

I have an HP z540 Digital Entertainment Center with standard hardware, that will not start up. The PC was running fine until I removed the cover and replaced it, since then I'm getting a big zero out of it. No response at all when I press the power button. When I removed the cover I sprayed the inside out with an air can, I did not touch or remove anything. I did a proper shut down and unplugged it before I did so. I'm guessing that I loosed a wire inside, but I can't find a wiring diagram for the motherboard. Help and Thanks.

I held the can pretty far back so I don't think any liquid came out. I was very careful to stay grounded the entire time. This case and motherboard are pretty non-standard but I don't see any green or other LED lights inside when it's plugged up. One thing I do notice with the case off is a green plastic piece that extends from the CD-RW mounting which seems to make contact with a metal arm from the top case. Near that green piece is an red wire "AWM style 30v etc" that is plugged onto the mother board but un-connected on the other end. It's close enough to the unknown green piece that the metal arm from the case could have unplugged it. The red wire is very short and I have checked for any possible place it could connect with no luck. (Yes, I just noticed the red wire and should have seen it before).

A power surge here (south pacific) is very possible, but I keep the PC on an surge protector at all times. Prior to my meddling the PC had no problems so I'm inclined to think the problem came from my removing the cover. If anyone knows where I could find a wiring diagram that would be very helpful.

When you sprayed the air did anything liquid come out of the can?....also did you ground your self to the case before you opened it? Does a green LED light come on when plugged up....the green light will be on the mother board.

That LED light that is not coming shows that your motherboard is not getting any power. Heres the 2 things I would do....

1) Replace your motherboard and if that does not fix it...2) Replace your Power supply.....

Have you recently had any power surges in your area?

Replace the Power Supply first. 19 times out of 20 thats the problem and it is usually cheaper than a motherboard.

I've had this happen and was able to resolve by removing the power cord for about a minute.
If still nothing, remove the side panel and inspect the motherboard for melting or charring. If you see some you will need to replace the motherboard, if none is present, start by replacing the power supply. Still nothing then it's motherboard replacement
There is a possibility the spark fried more than just the motherboard.

This is a special 49Mhz frequency keyboard and needs the built-in hardware (found in the Z540, Z545, Z555, Z560 and Z565 media centers). If you do not own one of these, the software will load but not work...

Most likely, there are some screws on the back of the case. Unscrew them, and pull the casing towards you (when the front is facing away from you).
