    Thanks logcabiny,

The lense assembly came apart when I disassmbled the S40.

I was looking for step by step instructions how to aline and reassemble the lens zoom assembly. There was none on the googled detailed German and American E18 sites. I have solved it by trial and error, damaging the fkexible printed circuit leads outside the lense. The lens zooms now by turning the final drive gear by hand. It seems that one of the smaller gears has broken tooth. However I don't know how to take it apart since the gear covers are held together by the flexible pcb soldered around the motor. Any ideas? - Thanks, Aetam

Have you tried Googling "E18". There are some step-by-step with photos on disassembly-reassembly that may help. You're committed now so go for it

From memory, you can unsolder the motor using solderwick. I would advise against unsoldering the photointerrupter however as it could be damaged easily. It wont completely detatch the circuit but will give you enough to dissassemble. Hope this helps.

Everytime you turn it on it loads then turns itself off without retracting the lens and does it everytime you try to use it

I dropped my CANON IXUS 65 on tarmac, while lens was extended. Thereafter would not retract and lens error. The IXUS 65 is european version of USA SD60 or SD630 Digital ELPH.
Tried pushing the lens back as explained below, clicked , but still would not work. I disassembeled the camera and removed the lens/motor assy. Then disassembeled the lens assy. 1 tiny pin had become dislodged causing the problem. 2 more of same tiny pins fell out. Now im not yet sure how/where they go back into place. If I cannot figure it out I see one can buy a new lens assy for circa $30 and just install it. I used my mobile phone camera to take video and shots of the disassembly steps. This to help re-assemble. I also disassembeled/ reassembeled several times as its trick and lots of tiny screws. To remove the pcb cables one gently pulls them using a small plyers or plastic gripper. Gerrykenny@yahoo.ie

Lens error

Have same problem as above. Apparently the gears in the lense slip a tooth, they can be re-aligned but this involves taking out the barrel, my question is, how do you do this as I don't want to pay Canon the AU$250 for a new barrel.

Canon SD400: horizontal lines and daylight images are overexposed (see photo)

In both the situations the problem is with the apperture control mechanism of the camera. 1). sometimes the flexible ribbion cable carrying signal to the lense assembly get worn out, replacing the same will resolve the problem. 2) in some cases the leaf blades of the apperture gets sticky, cleaning of the same solves the problem. 3). If you happen to drop the camera then the alignment of the motor moving the blades get disturbed.

In all the cases only a good repair man can fix the problem .

The manual states that the battery door was opened during use. Close the battery door and turn it on and off. You may need to push it closed to make sure the battery connections are made.

Canon Ixus 40

This can be caused by several different situations. Most commonly the camera has experienced some kind of impact which knocks an element out of alignment, preventing the lens from rotating normally. Symptoms of this include: *you may hear no mechanical sound at all when the camera is turned on *you may see visibly mis-aligned components of the lens *you may hear a loud "snap snap" sound as the camera tries to move the lens when the camera is powered on The second most common cause is a particle of sand getting stuck in the focus motor drive gears. This prevents the focus element from moving normally and causes the camera to shut off to prevent damage to the lens assembly. Symptoms of this include: *A loud "buzzing" sound when the camera is turned on, followed by the beeping and shutdown. Finally the third most common cause of this problem is a broken tooth on the zoom motor drive gears. Symptoms of this include: *the sound of the running motor with a regular "click click click" sound for several seconds. This will not be a "snap snap" sound, that is a different problem. *the lens will move in and out easily by hand as if free from any resistance. All of these problems require disassembly to repair. The charge is around $125 labor at my shop.
