Tension adjustments- bobbin metal or plastic-needle size- for sewing on jean cloth

Most machines can sew on jeans fabric, but you may need to go slowly or even hand-turn the needle when crossing thick seams to keep from bending or breaking your needle.

Bobbin: It won't matter if you use plastic or metal bobbins.

Needle: You should use a heavier needle - you can purchase 'jeans' needles, or use the heaviest sharp or universal needle you have.

Tension: For tension adjustment, you can follow the guidelines in your sewing machine manual but you'll also need to adjust the tension based on sewing on scraps of the fabric. If you are sewing light-weight denim, the settings are pretty much the default/normal settings. As you increase the weight/thickness of the fabric and seams to cross, you'll need to loosen your pressure foot tension. If you use decorative 'jeans' thread or topstitching thread, you'll need to loosen your needle tension.
*Always test on scrap fabric to make sure the stitches are forming properly. It is best to make small adjustments to your tension settings, then test, then adjust and test, until it is right. If you sew that weight of fabric often, make note of your tension settings inside your machine manual to save you some time the next time you sew.
I hope this helps.

Tension on reverse side of fabric is too loose-

Set the tension back to the recommended setting (in manual). This is usually around 4.

Always thread the machine with the presser foot up as this allows the thread to properly "seat" into the tension control.

What are the settings for regular sewing, I do not have a manual. It has 3 knobs on the front and 1 on top? This might have something to do with my problems.

The three front dials are as follows....left to right-Stitch width, type of stitch, and stitch length. The dial on the top adjust the top tension.

For straight stitch you want 0 stitch width, straight stitch, 3 for stitch length.

For zig zag you want turn your stitch width to how wide you want the zig zag, choose zig zag stitch, and choose how close you want the stitches to be on the stitch length dial. Practice on a piece of fabric. Usually for zig zag you will want to loosen your top tension a little bit.

The thread is gathering under the feed plate and not sewing correctly

The bobbin tension the this particular machine is not adjustable. You may need to take it in to be serviced and re tensioned. Hope this helps. Good luck.

The presser foot came off Brothers sewing machine

position the foot under the shaft making sure the horizontal pin on the foot is in line with the horizontal groove on the end of presser foot fitting on the shaft. Lower the pressor foot arm and it should snap right on. If not, press it up manually. the directions should be in your manual. If you don't have your manual, you can get it online at www.brother-usa.com

CAN'T GET MACHINE TO SEW WITHOUT BREAKING THREAD

All you can really do it change the needle, make sure it is in properly (flat side to the rear) and make absolutely sure you have threaded it properly (presser foot raised when threading so the thread gets into the upper tension discs etc...) You can also check for lint in the upper tension discs, they should be clean. If none of this works then it may need to go to the shop.

Best of luck and happy sewing!
