Question about Arris SB5100 SURFboard DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem (50120900100)

Modem crashes, and won't work again until I power cycle

Every time I step away from my computer, or stop browsing the internet and come back, my internet isn't working. All the lights on the modem are normal, but I cannot browse, or download anything, until I unplug the modem and plug it back in. I have searched and searched forum after forum the last week, and cannot find an actual solution. Does one exist?

You may want your cable company to come out and check the forward signal to the modem wich could be to low , or the return to the modem could be to low/high . one last thing is ,it could be having packet loss so severe that it drops your connection even though the modem stays linked up.

Internet Connection Issue: How to do a Sequential Power Cycle

Most of the time we worry about why our Internet Connection suddenly goes off without warning and when this happen, we find ourselves nowhere to run for help or cramming to call a technical support line ending up paying for a simple support such as a Sequential Power Cycle.
Internet Technology backbone is based on transmission signal. Signals can sometimes "time-out" causing your modem not to detect connection thus kicking your Internet off. This sort of problem is so usual that most people tend to overlook it. That is why I'm writing this tip as sort of a "First-Aid" for non-technical people to patch their Internet "time-out" problems.

How to do a Sequential Power Cycle:

Turn off the Computer. (laptop or desktop)

Turn off the Router (if you have any). Unplug it off the power supply.

Turn off the Modem and make sure to unplug it off the power supply.

Leave the devices off for at least a minute. Then turn them back on sequentially.

Turn the Modem back on. The modem will do a self test to check if all connections are working. Leave it for at least a minute to initialize.

Turn the Router back on. Let it initialize properly and wait at least a minute before going to the next step.

Turn the Computer back on. Allow it to fully load all the startup programs and services.

After doing the above steps. Check if you can browse the Internet using your preferred browser. Hope this helps.

How to Set up a Linksys router for Cable Internet

This tip will give you a step by step instruction on how to manually setup or install a Linksys router for Cable internet.
This guide is recommended for Cable Internet Service in the USA like Charter, Cox, Comcast, Cable Vision, etc.
 1. First you need to connect the device together. You need to connect your cable modem to the internet port on the back of the router, and the computer should go to one of the 4-port on the router labeled Ethernet (1, 2, 3,4).
 2. Then turn on the modem first, wait for the lights to stabilize before powering on the Linksys router. Lights that you should have on the router are Power (solid green), Wireless/WLAN (Green sometimes flashing), One of the no. lights where the computer is plugged in (flashing), And the internet light (flashing).
After doing this step there are times that this will already get you online. If the internet will not work, you continue following the steps 3.

3.If the internet is still not working; we will need to adjust a setting on the router setup page. To access the setup page of the router you need to open your internet explorer or Firefox on the computer that is hardwired directly to the router. In the address bar of your browser(Internet Explorer or Firefox) type http://192.168.1.1/and hit enter or click Go. It will ask you for a username and password.Just type "admin" for the password field and there is no username. Ifyou have ran the setup CD prior to this, then use the password that you have set when were running the setup CD.

4. Once you are in the setup page of your router make sure that the Internet Connection Type is set to Automatic Configuration DHCP, then click the save the settings button at the bottom of the page. After saving the settings, click the sub tab at the very top of the page that says MAC Address Clone. Set it to enable and click the button that will say Clone or Clone your PC's MAC and save the settings again.
5.After doing step 4, do a power cycle. Power cycle is done by turning of the router, modem and computer. Leave them off for a minute, tuned them back on in this order. Modem first wait for the lights to stabilize, then the router wait until the power light become solid. Then turn on the computer. This will get you online through the router.

Internet explorer stopped working

Diagnose Connection Problems With Internet Explorer
Internet connection and network errors can be frustrating and confusing to a casual computer user.
However, Internet Explorer provides a diagnostics tool to help identify and even repair the most common network issues.
This tool is simple to use, organized in steps, and can help get a computer back up and running quickly.

Open Internet Explorer and click on the "Tools" button in the control bar at the top of the window. From the "Tools" menu, select "Diagnose Connection Problems."
A window will appear, displaying the start page of the diagnostics tool.
Follow the instructions to determine the cause of the connection error.
The diagnostics tool will ask a series of multiple-choice questions about the connection problem you are experiencing.
Close all programs and restart the computer.
If you continue to receive an error when attempting to connect to the Internet, check that all cables and power-supply cords for the computer, modem and/or router are properly connected. Then, run the diagnostic tool again.
Call your Internet service provider's technical support phone number if you cannot resolve the error with the diagnostics tool.
The Internet Explorer diagnostics tool cannot repair or reset malfunctioning or failing hardware like modems and routers.

Internet crashing
If your Internet Explorer keeps randomly crashing (closing by itself), there may be an add-on or temporary page disrupting the connection.
Every time you browse the web, Internet Explorer keeps track of the websites you visit.
It keeps these pages, along with cookie trackers, in the "Temporary Browsing History" folder. Some websites cause Internet Explorer to crash.
Open the Internet Explorer browser. Go to "Tools > Delete Browsing History."
Hit "Delete All."
Check off the box that says "Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons."
Hit "OK."

Close and reopen the browser.
Disable Add-Ons
Go to "Start > Search."
Type "Internet Explorer" and hit "Enter."
The computer will search for any files with this label.
Double-click on the file that says "Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)."
This will allow you to browse in IE without any additional plug-ins or add-ons that might be causing the browser to crash.
Reset Internet Explorer
Open the IE browser.
Go to "Tools > Internet Options."
Hit "Advanced." Click on "Reset" and then hit "Enter."
Close and reopen the browser.

My belkin router n3000 stopped working out of the blue , internet connection shows up but no internet

Try recycling the router by unplugging it then after 20 seconds plug it back in. See if you can stay connected. If not, unplug the modem and the router, then plug the modem in and let it cycle up for about a minute or two, then plug the router in and let it cycle up.

If you turn your computer and router off at night, then when you turn them back on, if the router boots up before the modem, it will have connection problems. A power outage in the house causes the same thing if the router cycles up before the modem.

Wired, router, modem and internet light comes on but i am not allowed to browse...why is that? if i connect the modem directly to the pc then i can browse just fine...

Well , the problem is with the router , we can powercycle the complete network and if that does'nt work then router's setting's has to be re-configured.

Steps to powercycle the network:-
1)Turn off or shut down the computer.
2)Take the power chord out from the router.
3)Take the power chord out from the modem and the wait for 60 to 90s.
4)Plug the power back to the modem first and wait until all the lights gets stabilized on it.
5)Once the lights get stabilized then Plug the power back to the router and wait for the lights to get stabilized.
6)Turn on the computer and it might work else re-configure the setting's of the router.

Wireless router not working.

Power cycle the modem/router, which ever it is, or both.

Unplug the power, let it sit for about 30 seconds, plug it back in and wait til all the light stop flashing. Internet light may flicker with activity.

Signal found, but no connectivity

Try this. It should renew your configuration between your router and your internet provider:

Step 1 Log into the web-based configuration by typing in the IP address of the router (default:192.168.0.1) in your web browser. The username is admin (all lowercase) and the password is blank (nothing).

Note: The 192.168.0.1 address is NOT on the internet. It is the address to the router itself.

Step 2 Click the Home tab and click the WAN button. Dynamic IP Address is the default value, however, if Dynamic IP Address is not selected as the WAN type, select Dynamic IP Address by clicking on the radio button. Click Clone Mac Address. Click on Apply and then Continue to save the changes.

Step 3 Click on Status. Under WAN, Click DHCP Renew. If it does not get an IP address or times out, then continue with Step 4.

Step 4 Power cycle the cable modem and router:

Turn the cable modem off (first)
Turn the router off
Leave them off for 2 minutes**
Turn the cable modem on (first)
Wait until you get a solid cable light on the cable modem
Turn the router on
Wait 30 seconds

** If you have a Motorola (Surf Board) modem, leave off for at least 5 minutes.

Step 5 Follow Step 1 again and log back into the web configuration. Click the Status tab and click the Device Info button. If you do not already have a public IP address under the WAN heading, click on the DHCP Renew and Continue buttons.
If you're still getting no connection to the internet, another alternative (before chucking the router) would be to reset it to factory defaults, and run through the setup process again, from scratch.

Cheers
