I am getting two vertical black lines on my scans through the ADF of my Brother MFC 7040w all in one. I can see the two specks of dust that are causing them. How can I get in there to clean the glass or to just blow them off with a can of air spray?
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Most likely the cause is something stuck to your ADF scanner glass but let's do a few tests first.
Make a COPY with your machine using the document feeder. Now make a copy of the same document by laying the document down on the glass. One or both of these copies should have the black line. If they do not then there is nothing wrong with your machine. If the copy made from the Document Feeder has the line but the copy made from the Glass does not then the trouble is with your ADF scanner glass which is quite common. Just look to the left of your large main glass. You should see a thin strip of glass runing front front to rear. This is your ADF scanner glass. On some models this glass is contained inside the ADF feed unit. Just cleaned the glass thoroughly with a soft cloth and some glass cleaner.
Now if by chance you get the same line from both then you may have debris on the scanner mirrors. The scanner unit that travels back and forth under the glass would need to be cleaned if this is the case. The glass would need to be removed and then you can clean the small mirrors in the scanner using cotton tip swabs.
Most likely tho it is just the ADF scanner glass. This is true because this glass has documents traveling over it and sometimes specks of dirt, whiteout or other materials get deposited on it.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.
It's the same scanner ccd, after you make sure the narrow scanner window is clean, you need to power down the machine and power up again so it will calibrate to a clean window, if it has a scratch like from a staple, you will need a new glass.
I have the exact same problem. It was there since I first bought the MFC-7840W.
Vertical line appears in scans using the automatic document feeder (ADF). Vertical line does not appear when scanning single page (placing it directly on the glass -- i.e. not using the ADF). Cleaning the glass strip for the ADF (or the white pressure bar overhead) does not solve the problem. The problem does not occur with copies using the ADF (using the COPY button which is basically a scan and print). This would suggest that dust and dirt is not to blame because that would also appear on the copies. But since I believe a copy is basically a scan plus print, they should be using the same electronics -- a hardware problem on the scan would likely appear on a copy also -- there is some difference between how they accomplish this.
It's definitely not a software issue since it occurs on all versions of Windows and Mac OS X (and multiple computers). It also does not matter whether I "push" the scan to the computer by using the scan button on the MFC... or "pull" the scan from the MFC using the Brother Control Center software.
Lift the lid and to the left of the main glass is a smaller glass; that is what scans during the feeding process. Make sure that it is completely clean; even a speck of dust can cause a line to appear. I took a lens wipe and cleaned mine and my line was gone.
