Getting online with ethernet cable instead of USB.
I'm having trouble connecting to the internet with an ethernet cable instead of a USB cable. Are there settings on my laptop that need to be changed when switching cable types between modem and computer? If so, what are the steps?

click start control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll downnetwork adapters + expand Ethernet driver right click you will have options to update driver, disable, uninstall or select properties general you will have the options to troubleshoot or to update driver, rollback or uninstall a yellow? question mark means you need to install/update driver right click to install driver also you might check make sure your modem/routers settings are correct ie:password user name, firewall settings to allow your internet to connect also test the lead/s whether usb or ethernet you might check your modem first to make sure that you are getting a connection last resort ring your ISP internet sevice provider get them to check your modem for internet access online hope this helps don
first you must have an ISP Internet Service provider contract which will provide you with a modem and leads you can choose either a dial up,usb,or an ethernet connection to connect to the internet or if you have a laptop you can choose a wireless usb modem which can work on a desktop aswell once you recieve the modem just insert the disk provided and follow the prompts to set up your newinternet connection during the setup process you will be asked for a password I suggest you make a log of all pass words used outside of your computer incase of memory lapses or if this is what you mean you might have put in the wrong password or user id check to make sure you have put these in correctly first make sure the caps lock is on/off what ever applies to your user and password id that you provided to your ISP also make sure your routers settings are correct ie:password user name, firewall settings to allow your internet to connect also test the lead/s whether usb or ethernet you might check your modem first to make sure that you are getting a connection last resort ring your ISP internet sevice provider get them to check your modem for internet access online
It may not have a place for an Ethernet cable. These older laptops required special cards to be attached to them or inserted into a special port for them to work with an Ethernet cable. The port your referring to might be for a phone cable which means it would have a modem and be dial-up only.
windows 7 automatically install all the drivers in case it had missed the driver kindly download the driver from friend system or internet cafe on your usb drive. there is link to download drivers for Ethernet. http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp
once your your online go to computer management > drivers and right click on WIFI card and click on update drivers it will download the drivers and install the drivers.
if you have cable internet and you want both of your laptops online all time you could buy a wireless router [dlink dir-615 for example], connect it into ethernet source and voila both laps online trough wifi
hope it helped
Although you can use a USB connection, you have experienced first hand one reason why I never recommend it. Firstly, you have to install drivers for the modem itself, usually included on the install CD. However, if you just purchased an ethernet card for under $15 locally or under $8 on the web, you plug it in, and once it's installed you just go without further complications and it is faster and more reliable as well.
