Question about GPS

4 Answers

I have a Garmin Nuvi 850 with preloaded North American Maps and I have also loaded New Zealand maps. I have a free update for the NZ maps to the 2009 version but I am getting a "there is a problem communicating with your Garmin device error". I am running XP pro with the firewall off but I have McAfee as my firewall. Can you please help?

I have tried turning off McAfee but that didn't work either. I tried to use WebUpdater but got the following error message:

... you may also need to set the interface option of your GPS to 'Garmin' or 'Host'.

  • g_r_coleman Mar 07, 2009

I'm unable to do a firmware update as WebUpdater says it can not find the device after I have connected it using USB. I get the following error message: "Some devices were found; however, none have the necessary capabilities. Please make sure your device is connected to the computer and turned on, then try again. You may also need to set interface option on your GPS to "Garmin" or "host"."

Please don't respond if you are just going to say to reset the GPS or do a firmware update.

    Thanks

Thanks all but I have resolved the problem myself after viewing other websites.

Are you connecting via USB?
Try downloading the newest drivers from Garmin.

If its a USB connection, the firewall has no part in the com error

Did you try to unable your McAfee and then connect your device?

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

My gps is set on peru and i am in the us, the gps can not find the maps of us. thx ziv

You'll have to load the North American maps into the unit. Go to www.garmin.com and register your unit with the site. You will then be able to purchase the north american maps and download to your unit using the Garmin updater on the site. The maps are all serialized to work with each unit ID, so a North American map on another user's Garmin will not work on yours (it is Garmin's proprietary copy protection system).

I an trying to register my nuvi 255w that i bought at canadian tier and get my update for it and i can not find out how to register it.my address is 88 woodstock drive, sherwood park, alberta canada,t8a4e2.

With the off, plug in your Nuvi to your computer using the supplied USB cable (you can also use a usb camera cord ).

The Unit will show a screen that your pluged in.

Now go to www.MyGarmin.com and register your unit. It then will give you the lastest updates.

I use the North American 2009 or Updated North American 2010 maps for when I go back and forth to Canada from the States.. both maps are good

When I bought this unit, I was under the impression that updates were free as well as tech support. I would like to update Canadian maps.

Have you gone to www.MyGarmin.com and do an update? If you brought the unit recently they would update for free.

As a Nuvi 760 owner it gets me around Canada with no problem with North American 2009 map

Need to up date maps

Create an account at myGarmin regsiter your unit ID number this will allow you to unlock the maps that you buy. You then have two options the first requires you to have an NT 2009 or 2008 map already installed.
nüMaps Lifetime™This will cost you £99.99 and is a on off payment Remember — this map update can only be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your Garmin GPS device. For example, a Garmin GPS device preloaded with North America maps only cannot be updated with a nüMaps Lifetime Europe Map Update, and vice versa. Check product compatibility. nüMaps Onetime™ This will cost you £79.99 and does not rely on having a map already installed.
The City Navigator® Europe NT comes on a DVD or you can download it.

Webupdater won't detect Garmin unit

The below solution that I found on another site worked for me. Good luck!

Look at the programs you have running in the background. Some of those like printers or PDA interface software will hog the COM1/Serial port. I just looked at my task bar on the bottom right of the screen, and right click and turned off my printer software and a few other things. Then my GPS would link up properly and update with the Garmin Updater. I don't get why all the other forums have complicated explination that only help a small precentage. This solution will help over half of the problems.

2009 map update not loading

Fixed. Called Garmin. It seems that version 4.90 FW on the Nuvi 350 (which came shipped on my 350) has a bug where it cannot communicate with the Garmin software either to update maps or update FW. Tech from Garmin e-mailed me a patch that I copied into the Garmin folder on the Nuvi itself, via USB and Windows Explorer. I then rebooted it; the patch installed itself which then allowed the unit to communicate with the map upgrade software and all is well. 2009 map update is now installed and the Nuvi is working fine again. Haven't tried upgrading to newer FW yet; will probably leave well enough alone.

2009 map update not loading

Does it recognise the Nuvi? Are you connecting it through a usb Hub. Are the drivers for the nuvi installed properly? Usually there is a folder named USB, thats where the correct drivers reside, and that's where you tell the computer to look when it asks for the drivers.
