Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

Linksys WRT54G2 connects wired but won't connect wirelessly

I just helped my mother-in-law upgrade her firmware so she could get by the Wireless bug to set up WEP. She has a Sprint DSL modem so we changed the IP address of the router to 192.168.3.1. Everything had been working fine before the upgrade to firmware version 1.0.0.2. We restored all of her defaults but now she can only connect to the internet while wired. She can see her network in the wireless networks list, but when she tries to connect it keep saying contacting the network and then nothing happens.

I did notice in Status on the router that the IP address was point to 192.168.1.2, and her DNS1 server was 192.168.1.1 (the same address as the Sprint router). I don't understand why this works while wired and not while wireless. We changed the network settings on the PC to WEP and added the network key. Still no go.

Any suggestions?

I used WEP because that's what I've always used and am familiar with it. I'm doing this long-distance with my mother-in-law and have the same router. I do have the router set to use automatic DHCP. And I can't use 192.168.1.1 to connect to the router because that's the IP address of the Sprint modem. Changing the router's IP to 192.168.3.1 was a workaround I found on the web and was working fine until the firmware upgrade.

are you putting in all the dns servers that the dsl modem gives you?

how are you giving it a static ip address?

you should use stronger and better encryption. If you did the firmware update on the router you should use wpa 2 personal with AES type security. the router should be on dhcp. it shouldnt be 192.168.1.2 . the linksys router should default somewhere around 192.168.1.100 on the first wired dhcp device. if your changing the ip address to 192.168.3.1 you are not in the same gateway. If you dont know what you are doing with static ip's i suggest you leave the router on DHCP. if you cannot get into configuration page via 192.168.1.1 then i suggest you hit the reset button on back of router near the power plug.

I don't think it's a problem with the ip address of the modem or the router since you got internet connection on LAN. I suggest that you try the basic wireless setup without any security etc and see if you can connect. If you can, then maybe it's the WEP setting that is causing the problem. The other problem could be the configuration of the firewall on the computer. You can disable all firewall on the computer and try to connect.

I have a modem cable connection with time Warner cable but router isn't connecting to modem what can I do

Hello,
I install Linksys routers all the time. Usually the first thing I do, is update the routers firmware. Many times I find that if the Linksys router doesn't automatically get a connection from DHCP, updating the firmware usually solves it.

To update the firmware:
Connect just to the cable box so you have an active internet connection.
1. Go to: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54G2/download
2. Select your router version (can be found on the sticker near the model number) and download the latest firmware to a spot you will remember.
3. Now connect the router to your cable modem and computer.
4. Access your routers configuration page (If you don't know the address try: http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1).
5. Log-in - if you haven't changed the username/password the default should be a blank username with the password "admin".
6. Click "Administration"
7. Click "Firmware Upgrade"
8. Click "Browse" and choose the firmware file you downloaded in step 2.
10. Click Upgrade. Be patient and let it do its thing.

See if you connect after that. If not, let me know and I will walk you through the next steps.

WRT54G2 wired desktop fine, can't connect to wireless.

Hi Seth6025,

Try without using Wireless Encryption (password).

Try changing channels; default is 6; try 1 or 11.
Change your SSID: personalize it
SSID broadcast: Enable

Check the advanced wireless settings and make sure MAC filtering - DISABLED.

Reset the Linksys router by pressing RESET for 30 seconds should everything fails and re-configure. Firmware is another consideration BUT this is just a new release.

Regards,

Angel

Hey guys could i use my router as a radio to pull the internet signal from a next router without using any cable

With the Linksys router it is not possible. You will need to connect the cable between the two routers. Linksys router will not pick up the wireless signal from the other wireless router.
May be it will work If you upgrade the DD-WRT Firmware. Not sure but it may. consult with the DD-WRT expert before upgrading the firmware.

Upgrade Linksys WRT54G2 firmware failed.

there are 3 variants of the WRT54G2 , v1, v3 and v5 ensure that you choose the right firmware for the variant(its on the bottom of the router)
Go to the US site as this has more uptodate versions of the firmware.
For example v1 in the UK is at 1.0.0.0 dated 2008
v1 from the US site is 1.0.0.4 dated 2009

/Sometimes you have to call the cable company and they will reset the modem online for you. After you have done the whole powercycle bit, you have to restart the computer. Make sure all the other computers or laptops are shut off when you reset.

Seems like this is a problem with this model, try the following: Upgrade the firmware of your router: ► you may find the exact model number and version number underneath the router itself on one of the stickers. If it's a WRT54G v5 upgrade the firmware, make sure the firmware version is 1.00.9 and above. To find the firmware version: ► open up internet explorer ► on the address bar type in the numbers 192.168.1.1 ( username just leave it blank, password as a default is admin) ► go to the status page: look for the firmware version To download the firmware: ► go to www.linksys.com/downloads ► search for your product model number and version the list ► click on downloads for this product ► firmware ► download firmware ► usually the file you download is a zip file so extract the contents 1st To upgrade the firmware: ► go back to the 192.168.1.1 page ► go to administration ► firmware upgrade ► browse for the files you extracted and use the file that ends with a us_code.bin ► and then just upgrade Then reset the router for 30 seconds and voila ur done with the upgrade! here is Linksys' 2nd level T/S phone# 18668705819 If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
