Shotgun Microphone - Pop Electronics

By Beresford - usenet poster

In the 60's (I think), Popular Electronics published an article on the
construction of a shotgun mic composed of different lengths of aluminum
tubing.

Does anyone have an image of this old construction project they could
e-mail to me? Alternatively, information on a web site where I could ge
the article would be helpful.

Thanks

Bob, Greg

Thanks for the info. Looks like a parabolic made out of a large plastic bowl is the best
alternative for a homebrew application. Bob, your comparison to a parabolic is
convincing.

I never built the shotgun mic but was fascinated by the many tubes and the funnel used to
concentrate the audio.

Around the same time there was an Popular Electronics article about using a moving
diffraction grating to produce a color picture from a black&white TV. It was a
modernized color wheel. A Canadian firm was going to produce the device but I don't
think anything happened. Ah memories.

Sorry, no article, just the mike. But, I remember seeing a post
similar to this one a while back, and someone did have the info. Maybe
in a day or two someone will respond. I did a "google" but did not
come up with anything.

I have one right here next to me that I built when I was teenager, 40
some years ago. I played with it a year or two ago. It works fairly
decent, not great. When I hear how the parabolic mikes seem to work at
the football games, this shotgun mike leaves a lot to be desired. I
would rate the efficiency of it at about a 5 on a scale of 10.. And
yes, it was built to exact specs, and in fact, it now has a good
electret mike on it, and still does not make much of a difference.

I never did find a picture, but I know what it looked like. They don't
work, if they did you would see them today.
