Takahashi FS102 focusing problem

By Odud - usenet poster

I wonder if perhaps someone can offer some assistance. I recently purchased
a used Tak FS102 and received it on Friday after sending it out for cleaning
and testing (Texas Nautical). I took it out early this morning for some
looking (the first time I've tried to use it). Unfortunately, I could not
get the image to focus. It seems as though I can't get the tube long enough
to focus anything (tried moon, Jupiter and stars). Removing the eyepiece
and holding it by hand showed that focus was possible but at least an inch
farther than the focuser will travel. The focuser does appear to be
travelling to its extreme out position. I had the same problem with the
4.8mm and 7mm Naglers. I was not using a diagonal as I don't have my 2" -
1.25" adapter as yet. I don't think it should make any difference anyway.
The visual back and all extension pieces are in place as they should be.
How could I be so far off?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart Wood

Hi Raf,

How is the mirror in the Lumicon EAST diagonal supported?
Is it held in place they same way as their other diagonals?
Is this mirror also from Europe the new TV diagonal?

Is Raf your first name? Do you work for Lumicon?

It is absolutely normal with most APOs. To see directly you need
an extention tube. Otherwise an excellent diagonal as the
Lumicon EAST.

Do you have all the extension tubes? These get taken off all the time and are
easy to lose. If you don't have them, they are easily replaced. I find that
with the Tak 1.25" diagonal in place, I can achieve focus with any TeleVue
eyepiece with one extension tube in place, or with none at all. Two is usually
too many.

The star diagonals do take up quite a bit of the light path. Also the
Naglers
focus back farther than the Takahashi LE eyepeices. I believe they came
with three extension rings. I'm not sure if I've tried either without the
diagonal.

With the FS-78 and a 1 1/4" Lumicon mirror star diagonal I have one ring
and the 1 1/4" collet. From the focuser tube to the end (rear most) of the
collet is a little less than 3". Or, measuring from the end of the rack,
on
the bottom of the focuser. it is about 3 1/8" to the rear of the collet.
The star
diagonal is held by the collet.

Hope this helps,
Rich
