Question about Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera

Photos rotate incorrectly on playback

Having an issue with photos being viewed on playback screen. No matter the orientation of the camera (landscape or portrait) the playback screen rotates the photos so they are all portrait. This is very inconvenient since many photos are sideways and you can't tell if you have a good shot or not. I have tried re-setting the camera defaults, turnign the Auto Rotate setting off and on, as well as a number of other things, but I am still having this problem. Anyone out there had the same or similar issues. I use this camera in a high school journalism class and my students and I very frustrated by this problem. Please offer suggestions.....

I realize this is a function of auto-rotate. I can turn it off and the photos all stay landscape. However, when I turn it back on (because I want my portrait photos to be viewed as portrait) then all of the photos are automatically rotated to portrait view. This has not always been the case. Before, the photos could be viewed the way they were shot--landscape was landscape, and portraits rotated so they could be viewed as portraits. I want this back! I hate that we have to turn the camera sideways to see if we got a good shot or not. I have cleared all custom functions also, so that should not be the problem. Help!

This is a function of auto-rotate. With auto-rotate set to OFF this should not happen.
If it still happens with auto rotate set to off, then perhaps one of the custom functions has been set incorrectly.

After downloading photos to my laptop the playback screen does not function on the camera. The screen is fine while shooting but does not function in playback. Any solutions?

The memory card may not be storing your photos.
do you transfer photo direct from camera or use card reader?
If card reader the memory chip might not be fully seated back in camera ( not likely ) or you might have formatted the card incorrectly after transfer.
if direct from camera did you properly remove camera from computer? Remember, just removing device without ejecting device sometimes results in errors. Any device connected via cord to computer is using a USB port and on your task bar you should see indicator , right click select eject device.
if that might be the case reconnect camera then properly eject.

If you can get into the menu and find "reset" you could return the camera to factory settings.

How do you look at pictures that you have just taken?

Press the Home button. Touch the right-pointing arrow to enter Playback mode. Here you can view the photos and videos you've taken. You can also rotate, protect, delete and crop your photos and you can protect and delete videos. You can also go into thumbnail view to see more than one picture at a time.

I am unable to see all the photos on the camera after viewing the memory card on a laptop. They are still present on the card (85 files) but on the camera I get the message "File contains no image data"...

I can't tell you exactly why all your photos became unavailable on your camera, but I do know that many digital cameras as well as handheld media devices (zunes, sansas etc) are very fussy when it come to the images stored on them. They write index files describing what is stored on them, and yes, if your alter any files using a computer after they were imported and indexed, they will disappear from view on the device. I am surprised that all your photos no longer show up, not just the ones whose orientation was altered.

I recommend moving your photos to your laptop and using your camera to reformat your memory card. I am unaware of any way to coax them into being viewed on your camera once they have been shunned.

Displays file error message when trying to playback still images and video footage

Did you take the card and insert into computer/device to view photos?

Viewing photos can alter the format of the photos thereby preventing your camera from reading them.

I viewed some photos and rotated a few photos and my camera no longer recognizes the format.

good luck

I don't know how to view photos on camera

Since camera model number is not mentioned in question, there are 2 ways to view pictures in Sony camera.
Either you will find Play Back symbol in mode dial on camera, rotate mode dial until playback is selected or camera has Play Back button near LCD which need to be pressed so camera will shift to playback and you can view pictures in memory.

LCD monitor is blank

Canon would have to fix this for you. The fault may be the screen itself, or the LCD viewfinder drive IC on the camera's circuit board. In this case they will replace the circuit board.

Black screen when viewing photos taken

When the picture does not display - do you see the normal text and icons that you would expect to see? Or, is the screen completely blank?
