I have a problem now with my wireless connection, my laptop has XP and my and my router is WRG614 V6 my connection is dsl with ATT, the customer suppor from ATT helped me make the connection of my modem as a bridge PPPoE and that helped to get internet through the router but it just work when the ethernet cable is plugged, the wireless connection does not work even though I can see the wireless connection and that it has a strong signal. Thanks

Could you be more specific? What kind of router is it? What kind of internet do you have?

If you have DSL, what type of connection is your modem in? (bridge, standalone, etc)

If you have DSL, do you have the correct PPPoE settings entered into your router?

Hello Fresno Tech,

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection that does not require a login, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection that requires a login, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings.
b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box.
d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below:

6. Connect wireless computer to the router.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1, please follow the steps below:

a. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer.
b. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
c. Click on the Advanced tab.
d. Please delete all the preferred networks then click on OK.
e. Right click on the Wireless icon again and click on View Available Wireless Network. Please select your network and click on Connect. It will ask you for the network key.
f. Please type in the network key and then confirm it. Network key is the password you type on the key 1 of the wireless settings of the router.
g. Make sure not to enable IEEE and then click on Connect.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, please follow the steps below:

f. Select your network and click on Connect.
g. It will ask you for the network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect. Network key is the password you type on the key 1 of the wireless settings of the router.

If you are using Windows Vista, please follow the steps below:

a. Click Start then select Connect To.
b. Connect to a network window will show up.
c. Select your wireless network and click Connect.

Why am I losing internet speed when using router goes fro 60mps to 5-10 mps

how did you bypass the router ? what is connecting to the internet if you bypass the router ? question is the device connecting to the internet got a DHCP server and does the router have a DHCP server. What IP ranges are the two DHCP servers allocating.
You may need to switch off one of the DHCP servers in one of the two devices. Probably the DHCP servers are confusing each other .
Only my educated guess with the limited information on how your network devices interact. .

I get a full wireless signal but when its connected to wireless there is no internet. The internet works when connected (ethernet) by bypassing the router, but there is no data transfer wirelessly.

The wireless router most likely has been configured with WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryption key.
Unless you configure the wireless card in your computer with the router's encryption key the computer cannot connect to the router by wireless.

If you are trying to connect to her internet connection, you use her router.
You cant connect 2 routers to one modem, unless you set one up as a repeater.
Just ask her for the wifi password, and connect through her router

My computer connects to my wireless router, but I cannot get on the internet. The "Locked" light is on - I'm not sure if this is the problem .

Thank you for contacting the experts. The first thing to do is to ensure that your router is getting internet connection.

1. Plug the ethernet cord from your modem to your laptop directly by bypassing the router to see if you can get on the internet.

2. If you are able to successfully get on the internet, then plug the cord from the modem back into the correct port on the router. Make sure you have the cord plugged into the port that says "internet".

3. Once that is plugged in correctly, depending on if you are using DSL (phone company), you will need to log into the router to change the password/user ID settings. If you are using high speed (cable company), then you will not need to put in a user id/password unless you are setting up security.

4. Power cycle your router and modem simulatneously to make sure that the router picks up the modem connection and the modem picks up the router.

I hope this was helpful and thank you for contacting the experts.

Are you trying to install the router.
You can do it manually without the CD.
MAke sure that your computer is able to go online
through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the
modem
Then you need to connect the computer to the router
ad the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the
settings of the router according to the ISP.

My network connection lists 2 different signals ( using 2 names ) I can't connect to the internet with my router connected to the modem ?

Hi! I will be more than glad to assist u in this concern..That is right! if u bypass the router it will work, the reason why the modem wont talk to the router bcoz the router is not properly setup.. if you are using a cable modem from ur cable company provider- u need to do a mac clone on the router u have to clone the mac address of ur computer. normaly the mac of ur computer is the one register to your cable company and on the setup page of the router just selct on the internet setup, dhcp after clonning the mac address of your computer. u need to connect ur computer directly to the router and then after doing the process connect the router to the modem. if u are using a username and password, u have to use the pppoe settings on the router, if ur isp set a static ip , set it up to the router, to check the ip setting of your isp.. connect the computer directly to the modem and check if u have internet.. then click on start, run and type cmd,it will give u a dos prompt and from there type ipconfig/all and it will show u the ip address, subnetmask, default gateway, dns server.. I hope this will solve ur concern..
