You need to free the network from the phone (unlock it) you can download xss++ for about 3 dollars and do yours and your mates providing you have the USB cable that came with the phone. Failing that you would have to go to a back street phone repair shop where they will charge you a small fortune

I'm assuming your both on the same network? If your both tmobile customers or AT&T it should work without problems.
If not. The phone needs to be unlocked. to be used with another sim card from a different company. And to do that. Your friend can call his carrier he bought the phone from, request an unlock code, then unlock it that way, and you'll be able to use it just fine.
Only if your on either Tmobile or AT&T. No other sim cards will work.

It may be due to network lock, you can check it with other sim card ,if it remains the same problem ,it may be locked to particular network wont accept any sim card other than the particular network ,you can unlock it and used to other network, try here http://www.mobile-unlocker.com/nokia-5800-xpressmusic/rs2wp9/
You can put in any simcard in the 5800,the brand that you use is completely up to you to choose, try getting a simcard/network that is widely used by all of your friends and family, different networks offer different bonus'es etc.... some offer more sms'es thatn others do some offer more off-peak minuites.
If it showing you that sim card registration failed then then make sure your sim card is work or not.
if your same Sim card works in different phone. it could be that your phone has been blocked by the network
