HDD problem emminent

I have a Compaq Presario and the I get "HDD failure is emminent", I installed a brand new HDD same exact size and IDE. Loaded WinXP Home everything was great until I loaded SP3 and then received the same message. I uninstalled SP3 and the message went away. I updated the BIOS and reloaded SP3 and the same message returned. This is only day 5 on the brand new HDD and I did run the diagnostic from HDD manufacturer and detected 0 problems on the HDD. I believe the problem is with SMART and XP SP3. How can I get rid of the SMART in the BIOS?

You can shut off smart in the bios... i'm not sure which menu... i believe it will be in the second one on the left... that is if the bios will allow you to make the changes

Just enter the bios and poke around. You should see something that says "SMART" turn it off. If there is no option you're probably stuck with the message.

I have HP Comaq Presario SR1617CL Desktop PC, part number ED870AA with a Samsung SpinPoint P80 SP1604N - hard drive - 160 GB - ATA-133, I would like to upgrade to a 500GB hard drive. I have a ASUS A8AE-LE...

XP cannot be installed natively on an SATA disk without the appropriate driver which must be loaded during the install - an extremely complicated maneuver. The best way to deal with that is to just add the new SATA hard disk: install XP on the PATA and use the new SATA for your files as a separate partition. The adapter cable can be bought for about $5 from the same shop as the hdd.
All the other modifications are just fine - just remember , the RAM will not be fully recognized and used because of the limitations of the 32bit XP.

Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter

When you encountered this kind of failure this is a HDD error, so check the HDD if it is properly connected. Use another IDE or SATA cable, use also the another SATA or IDE slot of your motherboard. No another way to fix it that is only the hard disk you need to check. Maybe the IDE or SATA cable is bad or the HDD itself. Good luck!

DVRs, not sure at the moment about the one you have, are limited with the brands and size hard drives it is able to accommodate. I'll advise you to check the manual you have with the DVR to see the brands and sizes that it can accommodate.

Use the HDD from my old Compaq Presario as a back-up storage disc

Yes it is possible.
a) No precautions needed except the normal grounding you always do when working on computer components.
b) Yes, make sure your jumpers on BOTH drives are set - one to master and one to slave. The new drive does not have to go on the same cable as the old drive but no matter which cable you put it on make sure the jumpers are set for both devices on the cable.

What new HDD will match my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8?

Mark,
You can use any size HDD in your computer as a slave and it does not have to be an exact match for the maxtor. You will however need the make sure that the connections on the new drive match. For example SATA drives will not attache to an IDE cable and vice versa. The drive that you mentioned is an IDE style drive so unless your MOBO has SATA connectors on it you will need to buy an IDE/EIDE drive.

New hard drive choices

Hello, Bob!

Seeing as I am a 6 year veteran of Dell Tech Support, I should be able to help you out, no problem.

One thing that I would like to let you know is this: according to Dell Support Policy, you ARE allowed to put a non-Dell-branded hard drive in your computer. However, if Dell Support deams that this non-Dell hdd has caused another Dell component to fail, they will not replace the defective product. BUT, since it is HIGHLY unlikely that a non-Dell hdd would actually cause any other failure, feel free to purchase a non-Dell hdd. (I often times suggested that customers take this route because unless you're purchasing a refurbished Dell product, you're only paying for the Dell name.)

Anywho...

There really are no limitations to what size hdd you can install in your computer. Of course, a larger hdd will take more time to process information (Basically, there's more surface area to scan when your computer is searching for a specific piece of information.). Your main thing will be determining if you have an IDE hdd or a SATA hdd.

The Dell Tech website CAN be your friend (support.dell.com). From there, you can view original configuration and even available upgrades simply by entering your service tag (Usually found toward the back of your computer, on a black sticker with white text. It should list your service tag, an alpha-numeric value, and express service code, an all-numeric value).

If I were in your position, I would most likely not go over a 160g or 200g hard drive... simply to keep decent performance.

Hope I helped!

Replace CD-Rom Drive

solution: open front blue magnetic case door, look on either side of the power button, there are finger holes in the other blue cover.
lift out from bottom to top. this cover comes off, not the whole
case. inside find tabs next to cd drive, squeeze and pull out. note: the side sliders were they come out, they will come off the
cd drive when removed. it is easier to replace the top drive by removing the bottom drive, put in the top half way, then put bottom back in half way and slide them in together.

voice of experience. hope this helps

Hard Drive detects immenent failure.

If this is a brand new hard drive from a store return it for a new one. Hard drives have a built in feature called SMART. For some reason the SMART function is reading that there is something very wrong with the drive. If you have more than one hard drive installed on the system make sure SMART is detecting it on the new drive and not the older ones by unplugging the other drives from the motherboard.
