We have a FAX-2820. this is a dumb question, but does the fax header line come from the sender when we are receiving the fax? Does a header go out on any fax we would send out?

Yes, The fax header should show you who sent the fax to you. Every fax is supposed to have a terminal ID (senders fax number and Name)

Can I send and receive faxes from my computer ?

Yes. You can. You will need a telephone line, a modem and a scanner, along with your computer. And before you can send and receive faxes from your computer, you will need to install the fax component. This fax component is not installed in Windows XP by default.
How to install the Fax Component:
Go to Start Button -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs ->Click on Add/Remove Windows Components ->Click in the Fax Services check box and click Next. Now you will see a Windows Component Wizard, which will setup the Fax service in your computer. Make sure the modem and telephone line are connected to your computer, along with the Scanner.
Now you have to configure the Fax component in your computer. In order to do that, you have to go to the Fax Console which is located at
Start Button ->All Programs->Accessories->Communications->Fax ->Fax Console
fax_xp.gif In the Fax console, click on the Tools Menu and select Configure Fax - this will start the Fax configuration wizard. Click Next to start configuring the fax service in your computer.
Enter your Name, Your Company's name and your fax (Telephone) number on the Sender Information page.
Your modem will be selected under Select Device for Sending or Receiving Faxes - if you have more than one modem, you will have to select the correct device to send and receive faxes in your computer. You will also have to specify if the send and receive options - whether you will manually answer incoming faxes or if you want your computer to automatically answer them for you.
Remember to Enter your Company's Name and Fax Number under Transmitting Subscriber Identification(TSID) and Caller Subscriber Identification (CSID). These fields are very important.
Now, under Routing Options, you will need to specify where incoming faxes are going to be stored in your computer. You can specify a local folder or just let it go to the default location, which is the Fax Console.
You can change these settings anytime you want by running the Fax Configuration Wizard again from Tools -> Configure Fax.
Sending Faxes from Your Computer
You can fax any document that is stored in your computer. You can also scan a document and fax it by sending it to the Fax Printer in your computer.
To fax a document from your computer, Click on the File Menu of the document and select Print. Then under print (or Print Setup), select Fax in the Printer Name box. This will open the Send Fax Wizard. You can also use the option called Send To and select Fax Recepient if you are using MS Office.
As soon as you hear your computer dialing, the Fax Monitor (as shown in the image below) will start up
fax_monitor_xp.gif How to Fax Scanned documents:
Another way to send a fax from your computer is to scan documents and then fax it through your Fax Printer. This can be made possible by using your scanner software. You can also fax from a scanner using the tools provided by Windows XP.
For this, go to the Control Panel and click on Printers and Other Hardware, then select Scanners and Cameras and then, double-click on the icon for your scanner to start the Scanner and Camera Wizard.
Then, on the Choose Scanning Preferences page, click Grayscale Picture and then click Preview to start the scanner.
Provide a name and location for the scanned document.
Now, go to the saved image which you scanned just now and right-click on it and select print - This will start the Photo Printing Wizard.

Click on the check box for the image to be faxed and select Fax as the printer you want to use.
When you finish the Photo Printing Wizard, the Send Fax Wizard opens and you proceed as described in the procedure for sending a fax from your computer.
Faxing from MS Outlook:
You can also fax from MS Outlook by adding the Fax Transport Service as an email account.
Receiving faxes on your computer.
Remember, you have already specified where the incoming faxes should be located and also how you wanted the incoming fax calls to be answered -manually or automatically. The Fax Monitor opens up automatically when the modem detects an incoming fax.
To view an incoming fax, go to the Fax Console and click on Inbox. Double-click on the fax entry you have just received and it will open up in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Fax files are images in TIFF format so they cannot be edited. But u can print it out or email it to anybody else as an attachment.

What ''Fax server'' is good?

Hi,

1) The first is the obvious one....Microsoft Windows 2003 Server! 2K3 server has basic fax services built right into the O/S for free. This is the perfect solution for a small office such as a real estate office or doctor's office. All you need is a basic fax/modem in the server, and you're ready to go. Server 2k3 can be configured to route faxes to a particular email address, print the faxes to a network printer, or store the faxes in .TIF format on a network share, or any combination of the three.

The disadvantage of this setup is that it does not distinguish between users or phone numbers. ALL incoming faxes will be routed to the same email address. Again, this is why I say it is perfect for a small office. My smaller customers use this method to simply route all faxes to a receptionist, who in turn reads the fax, figures out who it's for, and then forwards it on to the appropriate recipient. The fax server does not support multiple trunking phone lines and does not distinguish between recipients or senders, but treats all faxes the same. SBS 2k3 also supports this feature. Server 2000 does not support this feature, and no add-ins are available to add it, to my knowledge.

The MS software allows you to send a basic fax if it is properly formatted. I believe it only accepts .TIF files, but this is easily verifiable on Microsoft's website.

2) The big boomer in the faxing industry is called RIGHTFAX. This is a completely different animal than the basic little faxing package that comes with windows. Rightfax is quite expensive to set up, deploy, and support from Captaris is also expensive. However, the software is very powerful. The main difference is that RIGHTFAX can distinguish between incoming and outgoing faxes, and routes faxes directly to the users.

First, you to set up and reserve from the phone company a range of phone numbers that all "trunk" (or ring) to the same physical location. For example, I have ONE phone line coming into the building, but I want that ONE line to have 100 different phone numbers. So Sprint will set me up with all the numbers from 555-5000 to 555-5100 and they all ring to the same line.

Then RIGHTFAX does its magic. Using a special kind of "super modem" called a Brooktrout board, it can actually receive faxes on all of these lines. (100 lines is not the limit, I'm just using that as my example, the limit is crazy high, like over a thousand lines) Then, based on the phone number that was dialed, it can route the call to the appropriate user. It integrates in with Active Directory AND MS Exchange, so it can email faxes directly to Exchange recipients. It's truly amazing that it works at all, but it is very consistent.

Outgoing faxes are even more impressive. RIGHTFAX supports faxing in a variety of formats. You can feed it an MS Word document, .TIF, .jpg, excel files, Raw text, whatever...and it automatically converts it to fax format before sending it. The only format that is not supported is .PDF, but it is available as an add-in for an extra cost.

There are multiple ways to send faxes, also. The best thing about it is that it adds a button into MS Outlook. When you click it, you create your fax just like you'd create an email, including attachments, and when you click send, it is faxed automatically through the server. This is especially cool because it reads Exchange data, so you can pick a user off an exchange or outlook contact list, and the fax server will automatically use whatever phone number it finds in the "fax" field. It even puts the user's custom (virtual) phone number on the outgoing fax for easy replies. You can also print to a fax machine, or use their little quick fax utility to send one-time faxes. There are a lot of great options for sending.

The user interface on the server modules is a bit clunky, but you get used to it. Also, like I said, the software becomes expensive VERY quickly, especially if you figure in all the add-ins you need, plus the trunking lines from the phone company. It's not for everyone, but it's extremely powerful and versatile if deployed properly.

Their tech support is pretty good, they got me up and running in a week or so, and were extremely knowledgeable about their product.

I'm not sure if there's anything more specific that you wanted to know about the software, I could go on for hours, it's extremely complicated. But, if you have any more questions about either of those platforms, let me know!

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Outlook express

0x800CCC78 SMTP_REJECTED_SENDER Unknown sender. This is caused by having the incorrect e-mail address in the Reply-To field.

You may have to authenticate in outlook express by putting in the SMTP server name of your internet provider instead of yahoo
for example
Incoming = smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing = smtp.yourISPservername
Some isp's will not let you send out with a different smtp server than theirs.
It's why you can receive but not send.

I am receivng spam in my email box even though it has been set to not allow spam, by myself as well as a tech suport person last week. I continue to get loads of spam!!

If you're using Outlook, a simple thing to do is to right-click a particular email, and click either 'Junk email' and add the sender to black list, or click 'Create rule', and add some common subject lines you get, and send all matching messages to go to the deleted folder.
