I have an itouch and satellite internet at home.Running through a
linksys BEFSR81 cable/dsl router w/ 8 port switch, all hard wired (cat5) I want to to use the itouch at home on a wi fi connection. Can I just purchase a wireless router and hook the sat. modem to that, then cat5 between my router and the wireless router?(port to port) If so, can I use "g" or "n" technology on the wireless router. My average speed on my internet conn. ranges from 300-512 kbps.
Thanks so much!!!

Re: How to get wi fi at home for itouch?
Your better bet is a wireless access point. It plugs into your router and can be configured to be transparent to the network so that any IP address you get for your wireless device comes from the original router (better for networking).
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Does the non wifi modem give out DHCP addresses?
Can the wifi modem be set up to receive it's IP address from DHCP?
If the answer to both these questions is Yes then that's what to do as a first step. Make sure the wifi modem DHCP service is disabled as it must NOT give out DHCP addresses.
Connect the ethernet port of the non wifi modem to one of the LAN ports of the wifi modem and NOT the DSL/WAN port. The wifi modem is not participating in any DSL connectivity at all so it's DSL light will remain off. The non wifi modem is doing the DSL duty so it's DSL light should be correctly illuminated.
What you are trying to do is a rather big job. Hire a company to connect the equipment properly. The headaches you save will be your own. If you install it, you will have to fix it everytime it goes out if you contract someone to install it and you buy a support contract when they install it, THEY get to come fix it and the headache is theirs, not yours. And NEVER install that type of router in an attic, they will overheat and fail very quickly.
Its not that the router is windows comparable it is on and Operating system can access it .
You need to set up the router with your account info from the company that supplies your INTERNET access.
You need to have a physical connection to the router to set it up use a standard eithernet cable and go to the default address which it should be (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 ) either one of these is probility the default address and login in if it has never been changed should be ( user-admin password- admin or password )
hope it helps here is more info on how to set it up
You have to enable DHCP in your wi fi router. For that connect your wi fi router to youe computer with ethernet cable. Then access it with following link http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or blank or "password" then Enable DHCP. Then save settings and exit router. Also check your wi fi network adapter property Check TCP /IP settings enable ip get automatically. Then it works fine. Let me know if you need more assistance. Thanks.
1st check your cable with the tester 2nd configure your router then the last configure your connection go to control panel then network connection then right click local area connectn then properties one click internet protocol tcp/ip then properties check obtain IP add automatically then obtain DNS then start to connect again
