Paramentric EQ suggestions

By Mini Me - usenet poster

I'm looking for a god "surgical" EQ. The high end mastering boxes I'm familiar
with ( specifically the Millenia NSEQ2, Manley Massive Passive) are wonderful
tone shapers, but lack the ability to dig in and correct problems caused by bad
tracking or playing, like too much 2k beater click on a kick drum, upright bass
clackiness, etc. My board's EQ sounds great, and is fine for general "roughing
in", but I'm looking for a scalpel. I've played around with an older
Klark-Technik DN 410 stereo 5 band parametric which I liked. What other boxes
are out there that do a good job at a reasonable price. I haven't got the
budget for anything that says Weiss on it.

I have lots of Pro Tools plugs and will result to some of those in a pinch, but
I like my wine red, my scotch straight, and my audio analog.

Thanks,

OK, as one of the first to poo-poo anyone who asks "what are the
settings?", what are the settings? I've never been able to get a
decent sound from an Ovation pickup, much less a beautiful Martin with
a good mic. Where are the offensive frequencies? And how narrow do
you have to get?

Hi Joe,
As Ramin pointed out you might want to check out the GML 8200. Another
contender would be the Avalon 2055 which lists for $4000. A lot of folks
swear by it for a transparent surgical EQ.

I have a pair of UREI 545s that do the trick! I can turn a bad sounding DI
ovation guitar into a beautiful Martin miked with a neumann condensor mic.
AND..It just so happens that one of my pals is selling a 546 which is a stereo
unit on 1 chassis. it is on Ebay with a reserve of $450 If you want it, let me
know and we can make a deal.

Hey, another 545 fan! I've got a pair I love, but they're aren't as quiet
and clean as some of the new ones, and they get a bit phasey up high.
They're pretty precise in the mids however. The 546s I've heard haven't
been quite as good, but very close. Also, the "little dipper" is made for
corrective surgery, but is also noisy. Lafont makes a new version with an
extra band that is quieter.
I'm still not of the opinion that the Ureis are as good a choice as the
other high end units mentioned. The GML is definitely a good choice. For
less money, I think the Millennia NSEQ-2 is a good choice, contrary to the
original poster's thought. I agree the Manley is a shaper, as is the
Focusrite, but the two mid bands in the NSEQ can get surgical, and the
whole thing is very clean. The high and low is selectable between peak
and shelving, and so can't notch things, but still can get in and do some
good. The best way to go would be to buy a Weiss and have 7 bands of
quality digital EQ to deal with. Especially with the linear phase option,
you can get more surgical with that than anything else I've ever seen. Of
course, that's a lot of change!

Have you tried the GML 8200? I think you'll be impressed.
