Go to SETTINGS, SYSTEM SETTINGS, BACKUP Utility.

    Follow the prompts.

Make sure you have an external hard drive or usb drive with enough space on it.

That's it. It's kind of slow so be patient.

My ps3 will play dvd's but not ps3 games (disc read error)? help!

Does this happen with every PS3 game you try? Make sure the disc is clean and you're putting it in facing the right way. If you can confirm that the disc works, or if the problem occurs on a bunch of different PS3 games, then it sounds like you may have a broken disc drive. Eventually the drive will break completely and not even read DVDs anymore.

There are a few things you can do though, in case it's not a hardware issue. First you should update to the latest firmware. Go to XMB > Settings > System Update, run it and follow any on-screen instructions.

If that didn't fix the problem then you should next backup all of your PS3's data. The next couple of things I suggest will cause data loss, so it's nice to store it now so you can have all your data back when you fix the issue. To backup your data, run the Backup Utility
(XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility). Choose the restore option and follow the on-screen instructions. You'll need a fairly large storage device (USB hard drive, flash drive, etc). If you're confused, check out Sony's official page on the utility.

With your data backed up, try the different options in Safe Mode. This link will show you how to access it. Try options 2, 3, 4 and 5, in that order, and see if it's reading discs in between each one. Anything after 2 will delete your data; thus the need to make a backup.

If that doesn't work, you'll probably have to send in your PS3 for repair. It costs 150$ unless you're under warranty. It's a pretty simple process; you submit the repair request, Sony sends you a box to send your PS3 in, then they send you a working one back. Unfortunately this process will take a month or two. I know from experience with a similar issue.

Hope this was helpful!

Ok my ps3 will read blu ray movies but will not read my games

Unfortunately a similar issue happened to me as well, and I had to send my PS3 in for repair (hardware issue; the disc drive broke). But maybe what I was told to do will work for you! Here's what I tried.

Easiest solution? Make sure your system is updated. Who knows, maybe it's a firmware thing. Go to XMB > Settings > System Update and run it.

For the next couple of things, you're going to want to backup everything on your PS3. The Backup Utility can be found in the System Settings Menu on the Settings Menu on the XMB menu (XMB > Settings > System Settings). More info on how to backup your information can be found on the Playstation website, found here.

With your data backed up, try the different options in Safe Mode. This link will show you how to access it. Try options 2, 3, 4 and 5, in that order, and see if it's reading discs in between each one. Anything after 2 will delete your data; thus the need to make a backup.

If that doesn't work, either try the online Knowledge Center (but it'll probably tell you do try things I've already outlined here) or send in your PS3 for repair (if it's under warranty, it's free!)

Hope you're able to fix it! Sending it in takes forever; you won't get your PS3 back for a month or two.

PS3 40gb will not read disc

Check the game disc/discs. If possible, confirm the disc actually works (Try it in another PS3, for example).

Restart the PS3. Then shut down the PS3, unplug it from the outlet then plug it back in (surprisingly this is different than just restarting/shutting down).

Who knows, maybe it's a firmware thing. Update your system to make sure. Go to XMB > Settings > System Update and run it.

And now we get into the scary, probable (and sometimes guaranteed) data-loss solutions. I would suggest backing up your data. Use the Backup Utility (XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility) to store everything. You can then restore all your data once you fix the issue.

With your data backed up, try the different options in Safe Mode. This link will show you how to access it. Try options 2, 3, 4 and 5, in that order, and see if it's reading discs in between each one. Anything after 2 will delete your data; thus the need to make a backup.

Still no luck? Unfortunately this you're probably going to have to send your console in for repair. Sony provides a form on their website to request a repair; here's a link. If you're under warranty it's free; otherwise it's expensive (150$ I believe). The worst part about this option is they take forever; you won't see your console again (or it's replacement) for at least a month, more likely two.

Hope this helps you get it working soon!

Can i myself fix error 80010514 on ps3

Well this is an interesting one; error code 80010514 implies a faulty installation of your firmware.

If you can still access it, try running the System Update (XMB > Settings > System Update).

If the update didn't work, you should backup the data on your PS3 using the Backup Utility (XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility). What we're going to do to WILL delete the data on your hard drive, so if you don't back it up it'll be gone forever.

Once it's backed up, turn off the console and start it up in
Safe Mode. This link will show you how to access it. Start at option 2 and work your way down through 5. Each option will delete more and more data; option 5 wipes the whole hard drive, thus why we backed up your data.

I'm fairly confident that by using Safe Mode you'll be able to fix your PS3. But if it doesn't work, there's always the option to send your PS3 back to Sony. It'll cost 150$ if you're not under warranty, and you won't see your PS3 for a month or two, but they should be able to fix it. Here's a link to the Service Request page.

Best of luck!

Wont read game discs

Start small; check the game disc/discs. Can you confirm that the disc works? (Try it in another PS3, for example).

Next restart the PS3. Then shut down the PS3, unplug it from the outlet then plug it back in.

No progress? Make sure your system is updated. Who knows, maybe it's a firmware thing. Goto XMB > Settings > System Update and run it.

Still have problems? Now we get technical. First I would suggest backing up your data, as things can and will get deleted in the next couple of suggestions. Use the Backup Utility (XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility) to store everything. You can then restore all your data later on.

With your data backed up, try the different options in Safe Mode. This link will show you how to access it. Try options 2, 3, 4 and 5, in that order, and see if it's reading discs in between each one. Anything after 2 will delete your data; thus the need to make a backup.

For my ps3 when i start a demo the screen turn black .and when i put a game in the blueray its not spinning what was the problem does its the mother board or what???

The Blu-ray drive is probably broken since you've confirmed it's not spinning. As for why demo's won't play, it may be some sort of security feature (disc drive won't work, therefore assume that games can't be played and disable all other game playing). I'm not sure I'm kind of guessing on this one.

What I do know is that replacing the Blu-ray drive of a PS3 isn't the easiest thing in the world, and there's no guarantee that doing it will fix your console. Your best option is probably to send your PS3 back to Sony for repair. If it's under warranty the repairs will be free; otherwise it's $150. Regardless of warranty status, you won't get back your PS3 for a month or two. You can start the process of sending in your PS3 on Sony's PS3 support website, linked to here.

Make sure you backup your data before doing so! Sony won't save any of it for you. You can backup your data using the Backup Utility by navigating to XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility. Then just follow the on-screen instructions.

Sorry for the disappointing solution. Hope you either find a better solution, or at the very least it's under warranty and Sony sends it back ASAP.

The back up operation could not be completed (80010012) it comes on evry time i try backing up my data

There is a connection problem. If you are tyring to backup to an external source, it is either connected wrong or incompatible. If you are trying the PS3's own backup, then I don't know what's wrong.

Restoring files after using the Backup utility.

1. Plug in the USB drive that contains the data.
2. On the XMB go to Settings then System Settings
3. Go to Back Up Utility like before but
4. Choose Restore rather than Back Up
5. The PS3 does the rest

You can have the PS3 delete the data file from the USB drive by choosing Delete Backup Data.

Can't restore data after linux install

In my case the problem was that the USB device did not re-mount after the PS3 restarted. Try this:

Start the backup restore process.
Remove the USB device sometime after the PS3 starts formatting
Once the PS3 has restarted, re-attach the USB device.
Wait for a while to allow the device to mount (about 15-30 seconds) before pressing the PS button to continue!

The backup utility does not seem to work properly. I have a 40Gig drive and the backup function works as normal, but when I go to restore it says no backup data. I checked on my PC and there are five files...

Try starting the backup restore process, removing the USB device sometime after the PS3 starts formatting, then re-attaching it once the PS3 finishes restarting. Wait for a while to allow the device to mount before you press the PS button.
