I'm having problems with my NEC 6x CDROM drive. It keeps locking up
my Win95 system. Sometimes all I have to do is click on my computer,
and it will lock up. If I disconnect the CDROM, it works fine. It
happens about 70% of the time. It will also sometimes lock up on boot
up (and when I try to access it).
Termination is setup OK. SCSI ID's are setup OK. Western Digital
tells me that Win95 has a problem with 6x CDROMs, which I'm not sure I
believe. Anyone have this combination working all the time? Thanks
much!
BTW: Everything shows up as working under the devices screen in System
Setup.
System:
Tyan Titan III with 512k PB Cache
P-133 CPU
IBM Ultrastar XP 2.1gig Wide SCSI
Seagate Hawk 1.05gig Fast SCSI
NEC CDR-512 Internal 6x SCSI CDROM
Matrox Millenium w/ 2megs
Western Digital 7197 Fast/Wide SCSI Controller
USR 33.6 Internal Modem

fine using the Win95 Nashville 4.10.999 BETA. My reseller *did* have
to send two faulty units back, though, which was really peciliar.
Mine has to be okay, because I just ran it with my CD-R, and a disc
dupe will take a lot from a system, I suppose. Perhaps a firmware
upgrade? Please let me know if you find out, because for now I can
only do Digital Audio extractions at 1x (ridiculous for an expensive
6x drive, eh?)

I have the same problem. The best you can do at this time is:
1)Update the WD-7197 bios to ver. 1.07 from their web site
2)Update the Driver to ver.3.0 from their web site
3)Disable "auto insert notification" under cd-rom/system/control Panel
4)Keep the cd out of the CD-Rom when you are done with it
Since we have almost identical system, follow those procedures should keep the 6xi
work under 95 most of the time.
In the mean time, don't expect WD solve the problem soon! They promise me they will
fix the problem last November. If you can return the card now, do it!
Good Luck!

the CD-ROM, and only the 32-bit WD SCSI driver, try turning off the Win95
autoplay feature. It's problematic.
