I have a Dell desktop with an NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A OEM burner. It has been flashed with firmware (from Dell) version 10 GE long time ago. Burning Maxwell 4x DVD+R OK.
Recently I bought some 8x Maxwell DVD+R. The burning speed was downgraded back to 2.4x using Nero 6.
Is there a firmware that can fix this problem? I'm not looking for a firemware that can make this burner to burn the DVD as 8x, just not downgraded to 2.4x.

The Herrie firmware for the 1100 (actually a hack of the 1300 firmware, with "unguaranteed" DVD-R support added to the 1100
Some 1100 drives may handle -R to a degree using this, but the main reason is to have a single root firmware , and since the 1300 is little more than the -R capable version of the 1100 abd was more up to date, it was logical...
The herrie firmware uses MCC002 @ 4x as the default strategy for unidentified media (+R)
Actually, if you have moved from Maxell 4x to Maxell 8x and they have similar codes, using # To switch the 8x media to the code of the 4x may help, as there is usually good compatibility.
Of course, if the new media is MCC003 and is not added by this firmware, MCC002 is probably about as good as you can get as a default strategy for it.
With some of the old drives now, it is getting to the time when you have to kludge it or scrap it, especially looking at the current prices ... I can remember paying more than that for a CD-ROM.
