NEC Internal 6x CD-ROM Drive

Cannot mount cd-rom during boot installation.

By jessie25 - usenet poster

To anyone who can help:

I am installing Linux on a Compaq LTE Elite 4/75cx system with it's docking
station (Smartstation). I have just begun booting off a Linux boot disk and
have only gone through a few steps to where the system is trying to mount my
cd-rom. The cd-rom is a NEC Multispin 6x (cdr-502) IDE. I have tried to
"Autoprobe" for the settings using every driver available in the
installation process without success. I suspect I need to specify certain
options but have no idea where to begin. Should I create a config.sys and
autoexec.bat on the Linux boot disk to enable the device (will that work?)?
Or does anyone have any experience with this system. Just guessing I don't
think it is the cd-r's problem but the proper communication with the IDE
that is the hangup. Any help would be great!

Thanks,

david sartin

The NEC Multispin 6x CDR-502 isn't IDE, or atleast the one I have here in my lap isn't. It is a SCSI drive with active termination. Windows 95 detects it but doesn't have the drivers.

In <#WARfKcF$GA.334@cpmsnbbsa05
When the boot sequence pauses to permit you to add any parameters if
necessary try adding "hdb=cdrom" to force detection of your CD-ROM.
(Assuming your CD-ROM is the second IDE device on your computer and
the hard drive is the first.) If that works then you'll need to add
it to /etc/lilo.conf to use your CD-R once you have Linux installed.
