There is no reason why this message should have come on, except that now I have to call for service. I am beginning to wonder if this is just a scam to get people to buy service contracts or get more money from us.

Re: Call For Service message
No, it is a life of parts message. It also may not have been reset. Try turning the machine off. press and hold. Copiers are like cars, they need things changed periodically like you would change oil and tires on your car. Its not a scam, its good service policies.

This is a very common problem and is basically your printer reaching a point where an internal counter has tripped. The primary reason for this is the printer has guesstimated that the waste pads are now full and need changing.
Resolving it is pretty simple...
You can either take it to a service centre (assuming they'll be able to service one as old as the R220) and get them to handle it for you.
Do some searching on the subject of fitting an external waste ink tank. You'll also need to reset the waste ink counter which can be handled using the A10_IPR utility that Epson released for North American customers some time back.
For more information on your specific printer along with instructions on how to fit an external waste ink tank this link should help.
If you are using a Xerox printer, you might have faced a system error problem, similar to "System error 09.038.46:113334" or something within that line.
I faced a similar error message like this a few months ago and i solved it using the following steps.
The ink count sensor flags were stuck. Verify that the ink is correct and genuine and then reset the system and error message by performing the following steps:
1- Turn on the printer 2- Wait for the xerox logo to begin moving across the display 3- Before the logo is centered on the display (stops moving) press and hold the "back" and "help" buttons on the control panel. 4- Hold both buttons until the display reads "beginning service mode initialization".Release the buttons and the printer reboots into service mode with the "Service Diagnostics" menu displayed 5- Then scroll until you find function menu then click "OK" 6- Scroll until you find "Clear ISC" fault and press "OK" 7- Click back several times and then reboot the machine.
If you follow these exact steps your problem should be solved.
check the printing file size. Also check that USB high speed is set to "off" in the secondary service menu. Default is "on" and can cause this message. To enter the menu press "Menu" key followed by the "2" key and scroll to the USB setting.

A lot of Voice Over IP phone providers don't support FAX or you have to pay extra for it. If thet refused to help, then they probably don't support it, if they did, they would try to get you to buy it. FAX data is not always compatible with VOIP transmission. Not much you can do about it, except compalin louder to them. If it is possible to set the baud rate of your fax slower, that might help.
This is laser scanner error message. The document is not being read from the data being sent. This could be a loose or damaged cable or bad scanner assembly. You can open it up and look for loose cables or connections to the board but otherwise if the scanner assembly is bad, it may require replacement. This should only be accomplished by a service professional as it is not a user serviceable problem.
