If you started a format, but it didn't complete, you pretty much cleaned out the hard drive.  go to start>right click my computer and click manage.  On the left hand side under storage, you will see disk management.  Click on that.  Now before we continue, I will tell you that if there is anything important on your hard drive....DO NOT CONTINUE!!!  As what I am about to tell you will completely erasse everything with NO chance of recovery...at least not without spending hundreds of dollars.  Find your external hard drive on that list on the bottom.  Right click...delete partition.  Then right click and create partition.  Then right click and select format.  That should be it in a nutshell.  Hope it helps.  Please rate!

It may depend on what type of file system you chose when formatting it. For file-type support beyong 1.5 Gb, such as high-resolution videos, aka. HD movies, Iomega should be able to recognize NTFS file system. Perhaps you chose FAT, or FAT32? In that case Iomega may not recognize it.

I CONNECTED THE EXTERNAL HD (HDS5C3015ALA632) UNDER WIN XP, NO PROBLEMS. THEN I CONNECTED TO ANOTHER PC WITH WIN 7, PC DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE HD AND ASKS TO FORMAT IT. JEAN FRANCOIS BELGIUM

It is because your computer which is windows xp is not able to be updated to windows seven. And when you format it you will loose everything xp. But then you can put everything windows seven on it.

Is the PC you've used before is the operating system is windows Xp? If you've using windows Xp before then you've plug it in a windows 7 Operating system, it means your hard disc have no problem the operating system of your PC is different than before. Try to plug it in a windows Xp operating system then recover it in there then format it in a windows 7 operating system then, the windows Xp and windows 7 try to make a network place in the connection then share the hard disc files that you've recovered then copy and paste it in the newly format hard drive that formated in a windows 7 operating system.

hi,
be it 64 bit or 32 the filesystem should have been ntfs as per the vista formatting. your most likely suffering from a "rights" issue. If the drive is identified in diskmgmt.msc (you can type diskmgmt.msc in the run command or search window) then you may have to select initialize (do not use dynamic disk) of the drive in question.
. if it then shows up in explorer you would right click the drive, select properties then security then advanced and owner edit this to be administrators and check replace on subdirectories then apply and ok view again.
here is some info on format for both platforms to function better together

My buffalo combo 4 2 TB wont show up on my xbox 360. I already have it formated FAT32

The Xbox 360 can only recognize drives up to 16GB as noted on their website, I myself have tried a 32GB flash drive to test the limitations and it was not recognized. At this time it seems as though microsoft is limiting their external storage to 16GB.

PS3 can recognize only hard disks that are formatted on FAT32. Since now the disk is formatted to HFS (a format only Mac's are using) you can't make it work. Save all the files on it and reformat it to FAT, then put back the files and only then connect it to the PS3.

XP, Vista and Win7 recognize this HDD as an external HDD but I can not see it in Windows Explorer. It shows up in the bar(down right) as external HDD is connected.HDD= WD Scorpio Blue(1 TB). Model=...

You'll need to check and see if the disk is formatted and recognized as a logical disk. To do this, Go to Start, and locate the Run option, and type in diskmgmt.msc or you can go to My Computer, right-click it and select "Manage" from the popup menu. Then, at the bottom of the list to the left, you'll see the Disk Management submenu.
Once you're in the Disk Management applet, click on the WD from the list of available hard drives from the list, and see if the partition is recognized as formated. If it's not formated you may need to format it. If the disk is recognized as RAW disk, then you'll need to first create an extended partition and then format it with NTFS file system. REMEMBER, if you can access the drive from another computer and it's recognized properly in Explorer, then formating it will erase all data on the disk. But if you never used it before (i.e you dont have any data on it) then you can go ahead with the formatting, which should solve your problem if it's a software issue.
If you heard your disk clicking for a while in the past, and you had problems with it: slow reading of files, sluggish in copying files etc. then your hard drive may be mechanically failing and in this case there's nothing you can do to save it. If this is the case and you still have warranty, return the disk to where you bought it from, and ask for a replacement.

If this was informative and helpful please vote with a Thumb Up. Thank you.

External HDD can not be used.

Click on the Start Button and right click on Computer and select Manage; expand the Storage section and select Disk Management; click your external hard disk, right click on it and select format; when you will be asked what file system you want to be used select the default option - NTFS; Apply, OK.

Simpletech hard drive not working

I have that problem similiar to yours. My simple tech stopped working for like two years so i decided to open up my simple tech and removed my HD away from the old enclosure so I can try building my own external hard drive for the first time. I bought another new 3.5 enclosure, IDE/ATA for the old HD. I put it in the new enclosure and it worked!

It's the only solution you can have. No need to retrieve data or re-format your HD. You can leave it the way you like...if you wanna reformat it...up to you.
