Sales Tax Calculations

My Peachtree Complete Accounting 2004 has quit calculating sales taxes. At the same time it will not enter my manual entry into the month end report. It was working fine but just quit. Obviously Peachtree has stopped offering assistance as I did not want to upgrade.

Reference the Microsoft download that is true. This has been doing this since last year. The mainframe is Windows XP Pro and my computer is VISTA. Both are completely up to date from Microsoft downloads

  • master_train Feb 27, 2009

There is no "options.dat" file anywhere on our computer including in the Peachtree folder. You lost me when you said launched PTP07. Not familiar with that acronym. Peach tree will run but not calculate the taxes mentioned (sales and FIT)

  • master_train Feb 27, 2009

We have already done this. Ironically, the 2nd company that we can run will do the sales tax. and the FIT. It is just the one company that is causing the problems.

  • master_train Feb 27, 2009

Quick books is probably the way to go and I have been thinking seriously about it but right now I cannot afford it. That is why I did not upgrade with Peachtree. I need to get this problem fixed.

  • master_train Feb 27, 2009

I am beginning to think that Peachtree intentionally put a bug in the program to force you into upgrading. The answers I have gotten from here are unacceptable. I have updated all of the tax structures through the User-maintained portal and evrything is working except these two. Thanks anyway.

Hi there, due to the upgrade situation, most software programs are rendered useless when the required update isn't installed. this is by design. if you can t buy the upgrade, i would suggest using another method. this software seems to be configured to disable this section needed for completion of your calculations. its all by design. you will need that upgrade or it wont work any further.

If you ae using as stated an outdated software for accounting and have refused an upgrade, then the only quick way to make it work again is to run it off-line and roll back the acctual pc date vias your regional settings.

You mentioned that there are two systems, 1 XP and 1 Vista. The XP machine is the "host/server". Do you have that machine setup to also use the Quickbooks or is it just the Vista machine that is used?

Sir,
Renamed the options.dat found in c:\program files\peachtree\company directory to options1.dat.
Did a file search to make sure no "options.dat" file existed on my computer.
Launched PTP07 and it popped up a dialog stating Options.dat not found.
Clicked OK and it proceeded to my company.
Quit PT and again it STILL wanted to install Tax Service.

Thanks goodluck

What taxes, if any, are included within a pro forma?

A pro-forma would usually include all the taxes that are payable by the vendor on behalf of the buyer. These are usually state sales taxes, or in some countries, may appear as a value-added tax (VAT) or goods & services tax (GST) applied as a percent markup of the transaction. The taxes included in a pro-forma should be those that apply to the transaction being taxed.

Is it a good? A service? A commodity, a major asset? Are there other fees & charges levied by local government that do not attract sales taxes?

The answer is:
It depends on what you are taxing, and in whose jurisdiction you are levying the tax and what rules apply to the calculation of the tax. Familiarise yourself with your applicable tax legislation.

In Restaurant Pro Express how do you program it to calculate sales tax AFTER a dollar amount discount is applied...instead of BEFORE the discount is applied??

Hi Lori,

Here is how it is done. In INVENTORY, create a coupon item. In description, call it DISCOUNT, set to FLAT AMOUNT, check each SALES TAX used, and set amount to a negative -1.00. Click INCLUDE and choose which items or departments this coupon works for. You will need a coupon item for each amount of coupons you have out. This will show the discount amount on receipt and subtract the tax discount.

I am denied access to change the accounting period in peachtree

I've seen this before with peachtree. What happens every time you work on an accounting file peachtree locks the contents of the file. Occasionally the software never gets the chance to unlock it. This can happen if the computer shuts down unexpectedly, a file gets corrupted etc. You should find in your installation depending on the version a scan utility that can scan your accounting main file and see if there are problems and correct them. If not next try a re-install of peachtree and run the updates and try opening the file. Finally if not it is time to restore an update you have prior to the problem.

No it has not been corrected. After yesterday's experience with the sales tax not working it finally came out that apparenty Peachtree had installed a bug that would cause the system to fail after a certain age. Your techs from your premium side that attempted to fix it before that notice failed miserably. I know there is a code somewhere inside it that cause the problem but they apparently cannot find it. I believe it is an attempt by Peachtree to force the customer to upgrade which I do not want to do.

Posting progress payments

If you are paying your sales tax by invoice date - the payments will not affect your liablity. ie you owe the whole amount of sales tax as of the date of the invoice. If you are paying sales tax as of the time of payment. You will owe sales tax at the time you receive payment.
Since you are using progress invoicing, the sales tax would be come due at the time of the invoice. If you are just receiving payments, you would receive payments (as you would with any customer, and not invoice until time of completion. You would just need to make sure that your preference for sales tax due date is set to Invoice date, not time of payment.

Credit memo's

Hi Marli...

First I cannot answer your question specifically (what you have to do in Quickbooks) because my use of Quickbooks is further back in time. On the other hand (I assume) you are trying to do this to suppress income (give credits back to your customers) prior to filing a return. Your "accounting" problem (not quickbooks) is the account you are putting them in....cost of sales?? or elsewhere...refund? Think that through and you have your answer I suspect.
