Question about Kenwood KM800 Major Classic Stand Mixer

8 Answers

I have a Kenwood Model KM800 mixer with a "K" beater. I washed the beater in the dishwasher and it now has black residue on it. Is it salvageable? I have washed most all of the black stuff off. Should I soak it in vinegar or what? Please advise. Thanks in advance. Glenn Miller

The black stuff is NOT grease. I believe it is a reaction to the dishwasher soap.

  • gmiller1932 Feb 27, 2009

You still seem to think it is grease - it is NOT grease but a reaction that occurred when I washed the K mixer tool in the dishwasher.

  • gmiller1932 Feb 27, 2009

I thought I was supposed to get help from FixYa, instead you advise me to contact the manufacturer. I don't believe I should be charged for that advise.

  • gmiller1932 Feb 27, 2009

It's not the mixer that is in question but the "K" BEATER. You advise me to go to the Kenwood site but you give me the wrong site. I want my money back!!!!

  • louiselat May 15, 2009

My k-beater has done the same thing - after 20 years of great use. I think the metal has for some reason is oxydizing, causing this black film. It is not hard to wipe off, in fact it comes off on my hands all too easily causing quite a mess. I would like know how to stop this from happening. The cake beater and dough hook, made out of the same metal are just fine. Perhaps I should try and annodize it?

Hi Glenn,
The discoloration is a chemical reaction that is harmless but unsightly. Have you ever used a metal utensil in a ceramic mixing bowl? It leaves marks that looks like the metal came off, which it didn't. Try as you might you will discover that you can only remove some of the marks just as you experienced. Another example would be hot tomato sauce and a plastic spatula, not a chemical reaction but the heat penetrates the plastic and allows the stain to set, Unsightly yes, usable yes, fixable no. I wish you could get a better answer but it is what it is. I'm sorry we couldn't Fixya!

Let it sit in hot water for about ten to fifteen minutes which should make the black stuff easier to wipe off, and try to wipe off the residue. If you say you wiped off most of the black stuff, it is most likely not a reaction from the dishwasher soap. If it still does not come off, try soaking it in CLR which should remove all of the residue from it. Then hand wash it and it should be back to normal.

Try rubbing the mixer with isopropyl alcohol, this can solve and remove many plastic materials.

Walgreens Apothecary Isopropyl Alcohol 91% 16oz

If that does not work , contact Kenwood here, this is not a common problem.

If it is just a taint to the metal of the beater itself it will be a reaction on the metal. you could soak it in vinegar or a metal cleaner but the stain may not come off. some metals tarnish and the mark will be in too deep to remove. i dont think it will cause an issue when using. its just a stain.

you do not need to contact anyone. you have stained the steel itself and i do not think you can remove the stain. it is nothing to worry about.

I have Kenwood Major Classic (Grey colour) will a mincer A720

Hi. I've checked the Kenwood Service website and from what it looks like, A720 mincer is only suitable for A701, A701A, A702, and for Major models A707, A707A, A717.

The mincer specified for the KM800 (from it's owners manual) is the
A950.

My KitchenAid Professional 6 mixer has been used about 2 years. Lately it leaves a black trail in my icing/batter/whatever from the finish being worn off the metal beater--the triangular one. The bowl has...

It sounds like you have two problems. First, the black marks are usually because of a reaction between the beater and certain chemicals used in dishwashers. Try washing the beater by hand and scrubbing it throughly to remove any residue. If this works, don't use the dishwasher again. You could also buy a plastic coated beater.

It also sounds like the bowl height needs adjusting. There is a screw just under the head for this.

I recently bought a used 901 Kenwood mixer from a second-hand dealer. The attachments seem to have a coating which may be deteriorating, as a black, greasy smear appears when I wash them. Any ideas ??

Yes its when the attachments have been through a dishwasher it damages the surface. you can still buy new attachments you have to change the shaft from the old attachment to the new one

New Kenwood chef km 001 - I can't get the beaters out!

Try turning the beater in the reverse direction to the direction it normally turns - clockwise looking at the beater (I think), this should make the shaft pins ride up on some cams which should release the beater.
