Question about Philips MCD703/37 System

1 Answer

Broken DVD holder/spindle

I have a MCD703. Great system. However, the little black spring loaded DVD holder in the DVD/CD player broke...its the part that goes on the motor spindle. It has to be a $1.00 part, but Philips wants to replace the entire unit with a newer model (but not as nice). Where do I buy one of these little plastic round (approx 5/8" round) pieces?

DVD PLAYER REPAIR (NO DISC ERROR)

Before you attempt to repair your DVD Player yourself, make sure that you have necessary tools and test instruments like philips screw drivers, multimeter, soldering iron, soldering lead, soldering pump, etc...

Watch this VIDEO
First I've loaded it with disc and observe the movement of the optical lens and the spindle motor. First thing I've noticed that the spindle motor didn't oscillate upon spinning and it's spin slowly unlike the normal RPM...
I've suspected the spindle motor was already bad but still to be confirm...

jdvillanueva_29.jpg

Unscrew the disc holder plate from the assembly to keep away the magnet touching the spindle motor, this may affect the reading and spinning of the motor upon testing with the multimeter.

jdvillanueva_30.jpg

This is how it looks like after removing the disc plate holder in the assembly. Spindle motor is secured with 2 small screws in the lens assembly.
Pull-out the connectors from the main board to see the underside of the tray.

jdvillanueva_31.jpg

You may test the spindle motor with your multimeter set in resistance measurement (ohms X1) even connected to the small board.
Bad motor will read either less than 5ohms(shorted winding) or infinity (open winding) and will not spin.
Good motor will read more than 50 ohms(depends the size) and will spin upon testing. Watch this VIDEO.

jdvillanueva_32.jpg

jdvillanueva_33.jpg

Onced you've confirmed that the motor was already faulty, unscrew it from the lens assembly.

jdvillanueva_34.jpg

Replaced the spindle motor with new one. Before you install the new motor make sure that the clearance of the disc holder is the same as the old one. Compare first the clearance because if it is to high the optical lens will not read the disc same if it is to low....

After replacing the motor re-insert all the connectors to the main board.
I've load same disc which does not read a while ago and observe what will happen. Observe the disc and the sound oscillation from the spindle motor in this VIDEO.

Hope that the above information, pictures, and video will help you fixing your DVD player yourself.
Thanks for visiting Fixya.
Have a nice day!

This is due to the fact that the central spindle is having a rigid spring holder. Use a small tweezerr plier to press it into so that the aligment to the centre hole of the cd is just right. Be very CAREFUL not to damage the mechanism with great force but be gentle. Also if you can pull out the cd using the whole hand with the fingers clutching the sides, you will have this problem reduced.

Its just the CD tray holder, u usually can get one from another junk player (most are the same). I can tell you that you won't be able to order one from phillips (no aftermarket parts available). You would need to have a really expensive shelf system for the company to support a parts market. Most of these when they're broke they're tossed out as no parts are available. You can call Phillips and they can tell you yay or nay. But I would try an find a used on at maybe a thrift store or something for a few bucks

A dvd is stuck in my Chrysler town and country multi disk dvd/ cd player. How do I remove it?

Look around the face plate for a very small hole...use a straightened paperclip or equivalent and press in a few inches...its a manuel door release and you should gain access to at least the loading tray.

Trouble playing dvds

I found that yes, the Pioneer DV-341 motor would not begin turning the DVD's at times without assistance (such as your finger as I found out when I disassembled the DVD player) to get it started.

Before buying any parts, I removed the DVD players housing (eight screws) and the top of the DVD housing that secures the DVD. This had the unpowered, spinning disc holder. Mine was secured by some plastic tabs and one screw.

I found the powered, bottom part of the disc holder had a rubber torroid (like a flat rubber band) glued to it that relies on friction to spin the disc. It was filthy, and needed manual cleaning. Having a Masters in Electrical Engineering, I used the appropriate tools to clean it, my finger and some spit.

I put everything back together and it works great. I'll keep an eye on the problem in the event that the motor is actually going bad, but I find that usually, things just need a cleaning to work as they are supposed to.

Dvd stuck in the dvd / tv

I had this same problem and fixed it too. It was from a flat torsion spring on the loading mechanism that had moved position. It hits against the chassis of the DVD housing preventing the mechanism from seating the disk on the spindle. Result is a stuck disk and/or constantly running loading motor.

Remove the one black machine screw behind the DVD player. DVD player will slide out of TV with its black plastic trim fascia from bay.

Remove two screws that hold fascia panel, remove fascia and lift off top metal cover.

With CD loading slot facing you, the problem spring (in our situation) was at the left. Also identical spring on the right side too. These are the two torsion springs near the front on sides of chassis. The helical loop on the left should be towards the top. If it shifted to the bottom, it can hit the tab with screw used to secure DVD chassis. When this happens, CD loading mech can't complete loading disk onto the spindle. If spring flips when the CD is on the spindle.... disk can't eject.

I used a pair of tweezers to gently grab the spring and "flip" it upwards by pulling it upwards. Spring will work for mechanism in up or down position, but needs to be up to avoid interence.

Solved my problem and DVD has been great since. If it flips back for some reason, then I will try attaching a small piece of plastic to the side of the chassis to contain spring in upright position only.

Disc won't load and then shows weird symbol in right corner

Check the black spindle that holds the disk it may be cracked or broken or the little spring tabs are broken. If this is the problem when the disk spins it lifts up and the head doesn't read the disk, this is what has happened to mine. I am trying to locate the part but so far have not had luck finding it.
