    hello!
    I tried this one:
    http://support.apple.com/download/iPod_R...

    but it only says:

About iPod Reset Utility 1.0.4 for Windows

Use iPod Reset Utility to restore the following iPod models back to their factory settings, when iTunes is unable to do so:

    • iPod shuffle (1st Generation)

    • iPod shuffle (2nd Generation)

The restore process completely erases all music and data on your iPod, and installs current iPod software on it.

For detailed information on this Update, please visit this website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?...

Note: iPod Reset Utility is intended for use only with the iPod models
listed above; other iPods are not supported. If you are not sure which
iPod you have, see Apple Support article 61688: Identifying iPod models

What can I do about it?

to update your ipod touch second gen to 4.1 version you must connect to your itunes account on your computer with ipod attatched sync all apps, music, videos, everything because it will delete everything and needs everything backed up. then go to your ipod on itunes and it will say update, click it it will take around half an hour to update and restore you ipod fully. This worked for my ipod touch gen 2, it kept saying when i tried to update i still have things on my ipod not synced to itunes when i have synced multiple times but it updated ok and i do not notice anything missing. this is all i know about this i hope it helps.

Have you tried restoring the iPod yet?
Use the Five Rs to restore the iPod. You will lose the data that is currently on it if you restore but you can always re-sync the data to the iPod.

Ipod nano 3rd gen says I have less space than I do

Yes, it does seem like a rip off, but that little bit that seems to be gone is actually being used by the software that makes the iPod work, without it you would not be able to use your iPod at all. So don't worry, it is completely normal that you are missing half a GB.
