SOURCE: Both augers turn when not trying to clean snow,as soon as I try to use it and snow gets to the augers, only one auger moves on my ariens 520 snowblower

It sounds like the auger always turning is the auger engagement handle/line/connections are not adjusted correctly. They/it is too tight causing the auger to engage before it should. It may be up at the handle where you loosen a jam nut, screw in or out a threaded shaft, and retighten the jam nut. (If you have ever adjusted a bicycle brake it is similar.) (I have a craftsman, made by MTD, and I think I saw MTD also list Ariens.) Or it could be an adjustment somewhere else (but I'm not sure where).

As far as one auger moving and the other not, you may have a shear-pin (shear bolt as the manual calls them) on each side of the auger's shaft (my craftsman has one on each side), and the one on the side that stops turning is sheared off. (It moves without snow present due to the driveshaft inside the outer auger shaft turning, but it won't turn under load (snow).) You may confirm a sheared-pin by turning the machine off and try to turn the auger blade. If it turns somewhat easily, that's a bad shear pin. Remove the old shear pin. If the old one is as long as the new one, that aint the problem. The shear pin in the image is one kind. Mine appear as a straight bolt (no grooves), threaded the entire length. You will have to rotate the auger blade until it aligns with the hole in the shaft. Use a nail that fits and rotate the blade until the nail goes in. Remove the nail and screw in the shear bolt:

The auger clutch control up at the handle looks like this:

Auger Control

  • To check the adjustment of the auger control, push forward the left hand clutch grip until the rubber bumper is compressed. There should be slack in the clutch cable.
  • Release the clutch grip. The cable should be straight. Make certain you can depress the auger control grip against the left handle completely.
  • If adjustment is necessary, loosen the hex jam nut and thread the cable in (for less slack) or out (for more slack). Recheck adjustment. Tighten the jam nut when correct adjustment is reached.
Here's another view of that:

I hope the above info helps you take care of both issues.

In order to order engine you must look-up the engine itself. If this blower still has the original engine then it is a

Ariens 1024 snowblower start

When engines set for the season with gas in the fuel system, they often form a varnish like substance that will block fuel jets, or make a float stick in the carburetor, or even seize up the throttle shaft.

You might try taking out the spark plug and pouring a partial teaspoon of gas into the spark plug hole. Screw the plug back in, connect the wire, and try it again. If it fires, you know it's a fuel problem. Sometimes that's all it takes to start it. If it does, I would still dump the old gas and add fresh gas along with some Seafoam or other brand of additive. If it's bad, you may have to have the carburetor rebuilt. In any event, with the poor quality of gasoline now days, you almost have to add Seafoam, or Stabil, or a similar additive at the end of each season to protect the fuel system.
Just a note .... I'm not familiar with your particular blower, but equipment with Tecumseh engines are very prone to those problems. Tecumseh carburetors usually require rebuilding or replacement before any other brand.

Good luck!

Ariens st24e leaking gas from carb body

As you said, it's probably got a stuck float. If stored without draining and fuel petcock turned off, gas evaporates from carb bowl and sticks float down, allowing fuel to flow all the time.

Solution: Remove carb and fully clean. Carb dip can be effective if left long enough but it will not clean out totally closed-up holes or clogged passages. Cleaners can only dissolve varnish if they can get to it and totally clogged passages won't allow cleaner to flow to where it's needed. Pros use a hot bath of cleaner and/or ultrasonic cleaners.

Start with a carburetor rebuild kit and use as many parts as necessary. Be careful to remove rubber parts like O-rings and gaskets before cleaning with solvents. Adjust mixture screws to factory recommendations and fine tune after you get it running. Good idea to purchase an engine service manual for you particular engine.

I Have a Older 5HP Ariens Snow Blower. It Fires Up and Runs On Starter Fluid. Gasoline, NOPE. What Is the Proper Number Of Spark Plug to Use in a Ariens 5 HP Snow Blower. I Believe it is Gapped at .30 ??...

Gary, J19LM is a good fit.

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

Electric start turns over, but engine doesn't start. Ariens snow thrower. Series 932

If gas has been sitting in the carburetor since last season, The carburetor will need to be cleaned out and rebuilt. Some ports may be clogged up that allow gas to flow.
