I want to connect a CAT5e Ethernet cable (with or without a RJ45 connector) from a DSL router to an older computer that only has a RJ11 input. This will be used for DSL internet service only -- no...

The only "outputs" from a DSL-router are:
* RJ-11 telephone-jack, only if the router also supports voice-over-IP,
* RJ-45 Ethernet port (always present)

You need to purchase an internal network-card, to create an RJ-45 port on the computer, and then use the CAT-5e cable to make the connection.

Internet service on only 1 pc

Yes, the 2nd PC will need an RJ 45 cable ( straight through ) not a crossover.
This cable is connected to the port connector in the router on the back numbered 1-2-3-4. That is if it is a 4 port router.
You can select either one preferably the number 2 port will do.
Then the PC should detect the connections and you will be on. automatically.
1. Check the network in the task bar on the bottom right of you screen for the 2nd PC and see if you have a connection.
If this is Windows XP you will see an Icon with to monitors showing . Right click to see the connectivity.

Would like to be to able connect second laptop to

If you are looking for a wired connection, all you need is a Ethernet cable to be plugged in to the LAN part of the router. If you want it wirelessly connected, run the wireless software in your laptop. In the available wireless networks, choose your network and type in the passphrase ( if you have wireless security enabled ) . This should help you connected .
Hope this helps

If it's an SMC with a little luck you'll find the drivers for your specific model number, Otherwise, go to SMC Site and search for your model number. If it's not an SMC device, let me know what brand and model number it is.

You should have an RJ-45 cable connected from your ADSL modem to your router's internet RJ-45 plug then download network magic or similar software to input your user name and password on the router. this way you'll have internet even if your computer is turned off.

Router

Your Thinkpad should work off the router your desktop was working off of if your Thinkpad has a network card of the same type (wi-fi or RJ-45 cable) and speed that is compatible with your router (A, B, G).

If you had security settings on your router to filter users you will have to adjust them to accommodate your new Thinkpad. You or someone who has access to your router's interface would have had to specifically change security settings to make this necessary though.

Hope that helps! :)

Which 1 to use

If it is a RJ-45 connector yes you can use it, The landline uses a RJ11. If the cale fits in the connector then it is a RJ45 connector and you can use this connection. If it works with your internet connection take the netwotk card you bought back. Hope this helps.
