Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Update won't finalize even though I press PS button

So I inserted a blue ray DVD and notice pops up saying that I have to update to version 2.50.  So I follow the directions and the new version seems to download.  After the download is complete, I get a message that I sho7uld press the PS button on my wireless remote.  So I press the PS button (which is right below the direction keppad, right?) and i get NOTHING.  So I hold down the PS button fort ten seconds and STILL nothing.  So I turn of my PS 3 for 10 seconds and turn it on again (I figuredI would update later) aand the same screen pops up.  So I thought maybe it was the DVD, so I take out the DVD and turn off the PS3 and wait 10 seconds and start up again and I STILL get the same screen.
My PS 3 is basically locked down right now and there is nothing that I seem to be able to do about it.

There are two different lasers on the drive.. Red for DVD and CD.. Blue for Blu Ray..

The Blue Laser may have failed.

Of course it always helps to check drivers and firmware updates for the drive itself. There was one firmware update 12/2010 for this player at the Panasonic USA website (support) Version 1.43

Finally Check your BD Ratings settings. There is a setting that could prevent all Blue Ray Discs from being played. It should be set to NO LIMIT which allows any rating. Page 24 of your manual.

Best of luck!

Standard DVDSs are read by a red laser while blue ray DVDs are read by a blue laser (hence the name). The blue laser diode is likely to be faulty and therefore standard dvds work but blue ray dvds do not. This is not an easily obtainable or replaceable part.

Blue ray player says needs update?

Hello,

to update your player, go to the website of your player's manufacturer, (e.g, www.samsung.com, if samsung is the manufacturer of your player).

Once the site opens, go to or click software on the page, and download software update on you your PC, then burn the downloaded software into an empty disc and insert it into your player, then your player will automatically to the update from the CD.

Or, if your player has a USB, copy the downloaded software into a usb flash drive, then fix it into your player and press usb from your remote.

I hope you know how to update your player now.

Good luck.

Avatar menu keeps poping up while the movie is playing

Make sure that the blu ray player is indicating that the latest firmware is installed on it. Press the setup button go to settings and down to version. Then record the version number. If it is the most current firmware version number after all call 800-237-4277 pressing 1 for all of the prompts. Inform the representative that with the firmware version number installed on your bluray player you are having this problem with Avatar. This helps because Sharp is
gathering information on any occurrences after an update and they are working on another update to resolve any occurrences

DVD will not finalize

Try this. In your SETUP options, ensure that AUTO FINALIZE and FINALIZE AT END OF TIMER are turned OFF.

Insert DVD to be finalized. Press SETUP button. Be patient. Once DVD has loaded the DISK FINALIZE option will be available. You can then FINALIZE.

I found it cheaper to get DVD-R from Radio Shack (about $5 for 25) for VHS movies that I know I want to keep. They do record up to 6 hours, even though the packaging is unclear on this point. Picture quality is as good as the expensive DVD's.

Try this. In your SETUP options, ensure that AUTO FINALIZE and FINALIZE AT END OF TIMER are turned OFF.

Insert DVD to be finalized. Quickly press SETUP button. Be patient while DVD loads. (You will not see the "loading" bar on your TV screen. You will instead be mesmerized by the SETUP options!)

Once DVD has loaded the DISK FINALIZE option will be available. You can then FINALIZE.
