I have dailtone in handset, and can call in and out using handset but when i send a fax to myself and it lays there sleeps. I checked settings. Moved crossconnect and provide another analog number and and mach. works fine. My trouble just started after 2yrs with no problem.
I've checked the incoming dailtone, used buttset called in and out, used cell phone called in and fax ring and picks up, checked wiring, fax machine line cords, settings, changed to another mach in that spot problem stays on that line
I'm sorry....Do I have this right? You say that another fax machine was hooked up on the same phone line and you have the same problem with that one. So the problem is related to that phone jack? It sounds to me like there must be just the slightest amount of interference in the jack, interfering with the fax. They are far more sensitive than just a telephone. You could try a phone line filter.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

The document does not feed into the machine. Be sure the document is not wrinkled, and you are putting it in correctly. Check that the document is the right size and not too thick or too thin. (See document types and sizes on page 43). You cannot receive faxes automatically. Check if "TEL" appears on the right side of the display. In TEL mode, you cannot receive a fax automatically. Be sure the handset is seated on the cradle properly. The machine cannot receive faxes manually. Do not hang up the handset before pressing Start/Enter to receive a fax. The machine does not send anything. Check that the document is loaded face down. Send should show up in the display after it dials. Check if the machine to which you are sending can receive your fax.
Manual mode turns off all automatic answering functions unless you are using the Distinctive Ring feature or you are using an external answering machine on the same line as the Brother machine.
*Distinctive Ring is a function of your Brother machine that allows a person with one line to receive fax and voice calls through two different phone numbers on that one line. Brother uses the term "Distinctive Ring," but telephone companies market the service under a variety of names, such as Custom Ringing, Personalized Ring, Smart Ring, Ring Master, Ident-a-Ring, Ident-a-Call, Data Ident-A-Call, Teen Ring, SimpleBiz Fax & Alternate Number Ringing and BT Call Sign.

Receiving Faxes in Manual Mode
Lift the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as your Brother machine.
When you hear the sending machine's fax tones (short beeps that occur at regular intervals), do one of the following:
If the telephone you answered is near your Brother machine or connected to its EXT jack(socket), press Black(Mono) Start or Color(Colour) Start.
If the telephone you answered is not connected to or near your Brother machine, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand) on its dial pad.
Your Brother machine will produce receiving tones.
Replace the telephone handset. Your Brother machine will begin to receive the fax.
< Easy Receive (Fax Detect) >
The Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature allows you to receive faxes in Manual Mode by simply lifting the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as the Brother machine. Your Brother machine will automatically generate fax receiving tones, at which point you can replace the telephone handset and wait for your fax to be received and printed.
Your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature is turned ON by default. To adjust your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) setting, please follow these steps:
Press the up or down arrow key to select Fax.
Press the up or down arrow key to select Setup Receive.
Press the up or down arrow key to select Easy Receive or Fax Detect.
Press the up or down arrow key to select On, Semi or Off.
*In some brother machines, Semi may not be in the options.
If you choose Semi, your Brother machine will only answer an incoming fax if you answer using its handset or by pressing the Hook, Hook/Hold, Hold, Speaker Phone or Tel/R key on its control panel.
Here are a couple of points to keep in mind:
If Easy Receive (Fax Detect) is ON, but your Brother machine doesn't automatically answer the incoming fax when you lift the extension telephone's handset, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand).
If you send faxes from a computer that is on the same telephone line as the Brother machine and the Brother machine intercepts the calls, turn Easy Receive (Fax Detect) OFF.
Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.
most often this is because it is set for an access code like "9" for an outside line. You need to check the fax settings, but I do not have a manual for this model. Look for a "user settings, or function settings button and try to print out the settings report or help list. hope this helps.
You don't specify what do you do when you try to send the fax, so we cannot say what's wrong.
The simplest method would be to place the document(s) in the feeder, pick up the handset, dial the desired number, wait for the fax on the other side to pick up and start beeping, press START button and replace the handset. If there is a live person on the other side who needs to start the
receiving manually, or transfer you to the fax, this is the only way to
go. If this works, and the receiving fax is set to pick up automatically, then you can program the quick dial buttons for faxing without using the handset as per your manual.
If all else fails try the manual mode:(Press Receive Mode to select
FAX ONLY, FAX/TEL,TAD:ANSWER MACH. orMANUAL.)
1 Pick up the handset while the phone is ringing.
2 Press Fax Start if you hear fax tones (beeps).
3 When the LCD shows RECEIVING, replace the handset.
(best used when you are expecting a fax and know that the incoming call is a fax)
If you are like most people you probably also have a phone with an answering machine or voicemail setup on your home phone. If this is the case you may want to set the reception made to TAD:ANSWER MACH.

Can you tell me if there is anything else conencted to your fax line? Most Ricoh products will display handset if the dialtone is not detected. It could be that something is using the line or is causing it to short.
Another thing to check if the machine is an older 1515- if this occurs after you receive a fax and you are behind a PBX, there was a batch of modems in the Ricoh machines that had a problem with not disconnecting the line, resulting in the handset being displayed.
Could be any number of items, normally I would start the troubleshhoting with line issues and go from there..
