Gateway replaced my notebook keyboard for free, keyboard still does not function properly. Only 1/2 of the keys type properly, to get correct letter or number, I must constantly hit the Fn key and the scroll key.

When pressing number on laptop its showing characters

From your description I must assume that if all other keyboard functions and keys work properly then the keyboard is faulty. For the number keys to print the upper case characters shown on those keys requires a shift key to be depressed or stuck. If all other keys work properly, replace the keyboard. Otherwise look for a stuck shift key. I have found keyboards for sale on Ebay.

How to type @ symbol

I am not familiar with this particular keyboard, but it sounds like you are not finding that symbol (@) on the keyboard. On most keyboards it seems to be the shift of the "2" key (at the top of the keyboard, not on a separate number keypad). I checked keyboards from three manufacturers, and that was the case on all three. However, if that key is not working properly, you could define "(a)" or something similar to be auto-corrected to the "@" symbol. Finally, you could try typing the ASCII character by a keystroke combination such as Alt-0064. In MS Word, when I type that combination (make sure to use the numeric keypad, not the number row keys), I get the "@" symbol. The same works in many programs.

My arrow buttons are not working on my wireless keyboard

Hi Janice, Any time I get a wireless keyboard problem the first thing I do is put in a fresh set of betteries. Nine times out of ten that cures the problem. If it doesn't then further investigation is required - howver my workshop time makes it cheaper to buy a new keyboard.
The Mac keyboard has Scroll-lock mapped to F14 but I think the wireless keyboard doesn't have that key.Are the arrow keys just not working in one program or not working at all?

it's more likely you haven't put the ribbon cable back properly. try removing the keyboard again and reinsert the ribbon cable carefully - remeber there is a bable grip that needs to opened to remove the cable and closed again after insertion to maintain contact

You possibly have a flaky keyboard matrix, This is quite common. See if an external keyboard has same problem to rule out the PC. Otherwise I think you may have to replace the keyboard. A relatively simple task. It simply plugs in to a socket with a ribbon cable.

Help please tell me why my keys will not work on my laptop.

Try using an external USB desktop keyboard (or a PS2 keyboard, if you have a PS2 jack on the laptop).

If everything works then, your laptop keyboard is malfunctioning. This is usually due to one of three causes:

1. One key is stuck in the "down" or "depressed" position (collapsed/dented silicone cup beneath, or damaged flex legs under key). Look at the keyboard from the side, to see f any key looks lower than the rest (or higher than the rest) Be careful taking it apart to clean and reassemble.

2. Bad ribbon connector, torn, or merely corroded/oxidized keyboard cable connector. This requires opening the laptop to fix. Usually 2-3 screws under laptop labeled as keyboard, allow it to be pried off. Release the cable LOCK, and remove the thin ribbon cable. Reinsert it 5-6 times to clean off contacts, and LOCK the jack again once you are sure it is all snug. If the ribbon was TORN, you will need a new one. Good luck, not easy to find on old laptops.

3. Worst scenario... someone spilled coke (the worst) or beer/beverage inside the keyboard. This eats up the printed oxide connectors, and this cannot be repaired. you will need a new keyboard assembly.. Use a magnifying glass to look between keys, to see if there is stickey, gooey material there. This would be the bad news indicator for number 3.
