SOURCE: phillips dvd player

OK lets start off by getting rid of the CD lens cleaner (CD cleaners do more damage then good). Now first we need to clean that lens with a DVD lens clearner (finer cleaning surface). Try to run the DVD cleaning disk twicw (no more) and try to play a DVD. If this does not work. You may have to test the laser power. get a schematic for the DVD that you have, and use it to let you know the specific power measurement of the power, This is done by using a laser power meter, you may not have one, so this becomes a moot point, but on the off chance that you do, use the laser power meter to measure the laser energy and make sure it is to specs as seen on the schematic. If you do not have a laser power meter., well I hate to tell you this but you may have to get a new unit. See the problem is the process of fixing this problem is simple if you have the right equipment, but if you don't you are at a disadvantage.

My panasonic dvd player shows locked when I tried to eject. I can't eject tehDVD. My kids could have jinxed it. Model panasonic sc-pt550 TQ

There are two lock conditions for this device.

If you can't eject the disc:

Enabling removal of disc

1. Select the DVD/CD function.

2. At POWER ON condition, press and hold down the stop button and the power button on the player for at least three seconds.

(The message, "___LOCKED_" appears when the function is activated.)

If you can't operate the functions:

Enabling operation of selector and disc

1. Select the DVD/CD function.

2. At POWER ON condition, press and hold down the play button and the power button on the player for at least three seconds.
(The message, "___LOCKED_" appears when the function is activated.)

Hope this helps!

Pioneer region free code DV-340, DV-343, DV-444, DV-545

Introduction
The Px4x DVD Upgrade is an advanced modification to your DVD player, which adds extra features and enables you to get more from your machine. The upgrade supplements the DVD player and in no way harms the playback quality or removes any performance features of the DVD player.

Main Features
The DVD Upgrade adds the following features to your DVD player:
 Multiregion capability
 Macrovision disable

Players Supported
The following DVD players are supported by this version of the DVD Upgrade:

 Pioneer DV-340, Pioneer DV-343
 Pioneer DV-444
 Pioneer DV-545

Modification Details
Multiregion selection
Nearly all DVD discs on the market today are encoded with a specific "region" in mind and are made in such a way that a disc designed for "region 1" will not play on a player designed for "region 2". This is so that the Hollywood studios can control the release of titles in different geographical regions all over the world. Our upgrade allows you to select between regions 1 to 6.
Macrovision & CGMS disable
All DVD players have a system called Macrovision built in to the player, which is designed to stop the copying of DVD discs to video. However, this system can have adverse affects on some projectors. For this reason the DVD Upgrade disables Macrovision to solve any problems.

Operating Instructions
You can select the region code by remote. This region will be tried first when playing a disk.
Due to this design, the modification will work on the RCE (Regional Code Enhancement) protected DVD’s. In some cases it will be necessary to insert a conventional (non RCE protected) disc before playing a RCE protected disc. Follow the instructions as detailed bellow:

1. Turn the player on without a disc in it
2. On the remote control, press 'SETUP'
3. Use right arrow to select 'General'
4. Use down arrow to select 'Basic'
5. Press 'ENTER' on the remote control
6. Press 'Display' on the remote control
You should see the region code and OSD version that the player is set to
7. Press 'Condition/Memory'
8. Press '1', '2', '3', '4', '5' or '6' to change the region code of the player
The text will disappear
9. Press ' Display ' on the remote to control the region
10. Press 'SETUP' on the remote to exit. Play the disc
This dident work for me but mayby work for you.

I PUT IN A NEW BLANK DVD THE RECORDER PREPARES TO RECORD THEN AFTER ONE MINUTE IT STOPS RECORDING . I OPEN & RECLOSE THE TRAY & THE RCA RECORDER SAYS BAD DISC.

Some DVD players need to format the DVD+/- R disc before it can be used to record on this is a bit strange as its a WORM (write once read many) disc this is usually what happens with DVD+/- RW media.

If the DVD recorder doesn't finalize (the process that makes it compatible with other players) the DVD+/- R correctly then is will be rendered useless, another coaster for you to use with you cuppa.

I suggest that you use DVD+/- RW media that doesn't need finalizing at least until you can sort out your problem.

WRT your problem with it only recording for a short while it might be that the DVD stops spinning you might need to take the cover off and check this.

You might try finalizing the disc in a PC using IMGBURN or other DVD recorder software. It couldn't hurt...

Best Media to use for DVD playback

The laser eyes on mobil units are relatively cheap and low quality. If you keep playing copied discs(any format), it will make them "tired"(out ot alignment) from trying to focus on low quality encoded discs and render it useless. Original discs are produced with equipments and programs that cost ten of thousands of dollars that why they tend to retain the encoded info longer even when exposed to direct sun light for times and easier for unit to read. But if you are like the rest of us going to junk that player after a couple of years in service then use Verbatim Platinum dvds, they are quite high in prices but retain info much better than others. But remember they are still copied discs not the original articles and might one day cause your players to fail completly. Goodluck.

I have found that copied dvd's don't always work properly and even the slightest blemish or scratch renders it inop also it is illegal to sell a copied disc as it infringes copyright, I understand that the genuine disc's are expensive but you get what you pay for.
