You could use the hdmi cable or the composite cable(like the old playstation one with the 3 leads but different colours, not red, white, yellow.) both would be better for a plasma. make sure your screen can utilise 1080 for hdmi. if 720 or 480 use the composite cable.
try resetting like this. hold down the on/off button until it beeps once, then wait a few seconds until it beeps again, the ps3 will have reset itself and will adjust the visual settings to fit your tv

You need to reset the resolution, try these steps :
Step 1. Turn the PS3 off into standby (red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it and then about 5 seconds later it will beep again. Let go of the power button when you hear this second beep.
Step 3. Wait for your PS3 to start.
This solution basically resets the video output back to standard definition.
do you wan the suround sound to play sound for what the tv is displaying or just the ps3
for just ps3
connect hdmi to ps3 and tv connect optical to ps3 and suround sound change video settings to hdmi change sound settings to optical it asks to set settings automatically you have tyo doo it manually
if you want to play every thing that tv displays then connect ps3 to tv with hdmi connect suround sound with hdmi to tv (this might not work) if it dont work then
connect ps3 to tv with hdmi and your tv should have sound out or something along those lines it should be two phono plugs in the back of the tv connect that to the suround sound
I have noticed using an HDMI cable that with some of the newer tvs you have to set up the tv also to enable HDMI for a game system. Like you said before internet tv and blueray dvd player work fine. Try adjusting the settings on the tvs themselves. I have a 50in DLP mitsubishi, and had a very troubling time getting my ps3 to work on that particular tv set while it worked flawlessly on other sets. And what I had to do was enter my tv setup menu and then power on my ps3 with both my AV and HDMI cables connected, it would pick up the AV first. Then I would alter the video settings on the PS3 for HDMI, and unplug the AV cable. Exit the tv menu and then reenter it. Then I had to setup my HDMI port from the tv to game in order for it to work, where you can set options ar usually like cable/dvd/sat, and so on. Without my TV being set to game that way it would not work. Try this and see if it helps. Good Luck.
go back to your friend or another with a hdmi tv then connect the ps3... when connected go into the menu for display and switch output from hdmi to scart it should then work on your tv
try using the composite cables as well.....with your tv set to the composite input go back into the settings and select the HDMI output switch your tv's input back to your HDMI input and remove the composite cables....it should work fine...
to all those who cannot see any display..hold down the on/off button until it beeps once, then wait a few seconds until it beeps again, the ps3 will have reset itself and will adjust the visual settings to fit your tv
