On a XP SP2 machine Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 only works after installing the software/driver. After a reboot, the software does not find the cam anymore.
A re-install gives again a working cam, until the machine is rebooted again.
Solutions? (LifeCam software v1.21) -- CU, Eric @ TechNet MngtNgrps.
The entries that the "install" places in the registry, should be found in the .inf file the camera install uses. If the registry is not being saved at shutdown due to corruption or other reason, then the entries will not be there after startup.

Cari & Bob I,
Thanks for your comments.
I have not noticed so far that registry entries were not correctly saved. But as of yet, have not focussed on that ...
For the matter, if the cam is malfunctioning, this is not the case: On a second install of XP on the same machine (a "safety install" for maintenance purposes; as I do as a good practice on all PC's) it is functioning perfect! So, I conclude that the problem lies in that specific installment of XP, not in the hardware. It is an installment of XP that the user now already use for more than two years, with no great problems that could not be fixed, thus far ... (N.B. Of course, on that installment are the SP's & security patches up to date.)
Bob I: Do you have specific info about what registry entries I could/should monitor? -- CU, Eric @ TechNet MngtNgrps.
Try uninstalling the LifeCam software. Reboot your computer. Install the software again without plugging in the webcam. Plug in the webcam only when asked to during the installation and follow the instructions.
my problem with this webcam is I can adjust it to make it lighter as during the day the sun is out so i got to darken my cam as it's too bright and then like come night time i can't adjust it back unless i uninstal it and reinstal it. Everytime. Anyone else having that problem with the cam. I'm also checking back too see if they added any new effects too this cam and it's been like 6 months and nothing. The same effects as when i got it

Perhaps there is a issue with the registry entries being saved?

Hmmm, this is a strange one!!! Do other USB devices exhibit the same behavior or not? If not, I'd call MS and get the LifeCam replaced, because my VX-6000 certainly does not disappear after reboot on my notebook and it must be very frustrating to have to reinstall it every reboot.

Yes, in all USB ports. It does not matter on which one the cam is connected ... -- CU, Eric @ TechNet MngtNgrps.
Hi,
I bought the Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 around 6 months ago, and installed the necessary software on to my computer.
I then bought a laptop and tried to plug the webcam in to that. Obviously it wouldnt work as i did not have the origional disk to install all of the right settings etc on to the laptop.
My laptop is Vista and i was wondering if there is any other possible way for me to install the webcam without the origional disk.
I can't install the webcam as cannot find LifeCam software v1.21 on the microsoft site. From the error messages It asks for the software and USB but can't find what I need to install
