1st go the the house breaker (dbl breaker) for the dryer and shut it off and turn it back on, your dryer runs on 220 volts of power but if the breaker is partially tripped it may be only running on 110 volts which is only enough power to turn the lights on and to turn the drum the element needs 220 volts to turn on. If it still doesn't heat after resetting the breaker then you may need a heating element or thermostat. The dryer isn't shutting off because it isn't detecting the clothes are getting dry so once you fix your heating problem the dryer should start shutting off on its own again.
If your dryer is not drying like it once did or if you just have nottaken the time to give yourself a clean dryer in a long time then youneed to do that. At least once a year the dryer cleaning should takeplace. Lint build up in the dryer duct is one of the main causesfor your dryer to fail.
what's the model number?if it's gas you could have bad gas coils, the coils will work for the first 15 to 30 minutes and then no heat, when the coils are failing they will work until they get hot then stop working, when they cool they will work again, also when was the last time you cleaned out the dryer and vent line?if it's gas you should do this once a year, electric once every two years, you have to clean out the duct that the lint filter slides into, vac out the cabinet where the motor is and if the vent line is a long run from the back of the dryer to the outside i use a leaf blower to blow out the line.you can remove the bottom panel, start the dryer with clothes in it and after 15 to 30 minutes see if the flame still lites if it's gas,if it doesn't change out the gas coils located on top of the gas valve.
If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heatingthe most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glowssometimes it is still not working properly.

Do you know if the dryer vent is free of obstructions?Check outside where the dryer vents outside ,and see if the air is weak or flowing freely. If it is not clogged the air should be pretty strong from the vent outside. If it has blockage it will definitly take longer to dry your clothes.
