If Explorer is corrupt then most of its support will not load, hence the long list of errors. Can you press F8 just before boot and choose "repair" from the options menu? That may repair the main kernel.

Too slow, how can i speed it up

How to Make Windows XP Startup Faster
Steps
1.Click on Start, then Run, and type "msconfig". Wait for a new window to pop up.
2.Look under the "BOOT.INI" tab. You will see a box labeled "Timeout:", and a numerical value. By default, it's 30, which means 30 seconds of wait time before boot. This can be changed, using 3 seconds. (Note: if you have more than one operating system, this means the wait time to startup to the highlighted OS. you might want a bit more than 3 seconds)
3.Delete the temporary files periodically from your computer to make the applications run faster. Type %Temp% in the run dialog box by clicking on Start -> Run, and click on "OK". You will see an open folder with many files. Click on the Edit menu and click on Select all and then click on the File menu and select Delete. Note: Always confirm that the folder which is opened has a temp on the top of menu bar and the folder indicates that it is a temporary folder.
4.Perform a scandisk to see that your computer hard drive is in healthy condition and it helps your computer run faster.
5.Always perform a disk defragmentation at least once in a month. start the disk defragmentation from the system tools available in the accessories from the start menu. it takes a longer time and it is advised not to run any applications in the computer including the screen savers, while running disk defragmentation.
Hibernation
After you have done all this, another method you can do is to allow the computer to hibernate. Hibernation closes and opens Windows faster than normally. However, Hibernation is a good long-term solution, as it does not waste electricity.
1.Go to Start->Control Panel->Power Options. Click on the Hibernate tab.
2.Click on the box that says "Enable hibernation" to check it.
3.Click on the Advanced tab and change the Power buttons options if you want to hibernate by pressing the sleep button or the power button. Otherwise, holding the Shift key while in the Turn Off Computer menu will give you the option to hibernate.
4.Restart your computer every week or so to clear your computer.
The power can then be completely turned off, even at the socket so that no power is wasted.
Prefetch
1.Simply browse to the windows folder (Ex: C:Windows) and under there you should see the prefetch folder. Go into the prefetch folder and delete all the files (Careful! It should look like this c:windowsprefetch). We need to edit a registry key to tweak it. Open regedit and browse to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters
Under this key you should see a value named: EnablePrefetcher
It has 4 possible values:
0- Disabled : The prefetch system is turned off.
1- Application : The prefetch only caches applications.
2- Boot : The prefetch only caches boot system files.
3- All : The prefetch caches boot, and application files.
We don't want to disable it entirely. This would actually make boot times *longer*. This is because this feature is also used to speed up the loading of boot files. That is why we are going to pick the number 2 option. It allows us to keep the advantage of caching system files, without continually clogging the system up with applications.
Set the value to 2 and reboot.
The 2nd time you boot it should boot much faster. Remember that the side effect is that launching individual applications once windows has loaded will now be slightly slower.
Tips
When installing new software choose not to add the program to the startup folder.
. Regularly check to see what programs are running from your startup folder as malicious programs such as spyware may have installed itself without your knowledge.
. If you accidentally uncheck a program, just retrace the steps above and recheck the program and restart your computer.
. Adding more RAM to a Windows XP computer helps it boot faster, and since RAM prices are very low these days, it's an easy way to boot faster.
. uncheck system startup unnecessary startup programs*
Warnings
. Save any open work before making changes.
. Shut down all applications before making changes.
. Don't uncheck anything from Symantec or any other anti-virus or anti-malware software. Doing so may disable or hinder the protection of your PC.

Advent 7113 laptop very slow would like to return it to factory settings but dont know how help

After researching all the information online, I have put up the maximum possible detailed steps to help you out:

Your Advent computer uses the latest recovery system that doesn't require any CDs or DVDs to restore your PC to it's original factory condition.

1) Restart your Computer.
2) Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting System Recovery" is displayed.
3)
The recovery will load and display a menu of options:

(a)
Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are restored at the end of the recovery process.

To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer, click the Advanced button.

(b)
System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows®, supplied applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be reinstalled.

(c)
System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers will be reinstalled.

4)
Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
5)
You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
6)
The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

Here are some additional information:

a) Press the ALT and D keys at the Windows style recovery menu options to access a command prompt. This will allow access to C: drive.

b) The command prompt will default to c:\minint\system32 where you can run a variety of tools including CHKDSK.EXE.

c)
For more information on these options, please read the Advent recovery trouble-shooter.

Advent recovery trouble-shooter:

If a user is experiencing recovery problems on an Advent PC, then try to follow these steps.

Note: These steps will remove all personal data and all applications installed after the PC was purchased. Where possible ensure that all data and personal files are backed up BEFORE trying these destructive diagnostic steps.

1)
Check the integrity of the recovery CD, or the update CD.
2)
It is possible to verify the integrity of the recovery CD, or the update CD from within the Recovery programme.

a)
Boot from the recovery C.
b)
At the ‘Press R to display system recovery options’, press ‘R’.
c)
Once in the System Recovery screen, press ALT + D to access the WinPE command prompt.
d)
Type in Xcopy D:\*.* /E /V C:\ and press Enter.
e)
D:\ is the CD ROM drive letter
C:\ is the HDD
/E copies everything
/V verifies the data with a CRC check
.
f) If there is an error with the CD, then you will get the message:

File creation error – Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

g) If there are no errors, then you will be left at a prompt again.

3)
If Windows® is accessible, then boot from the recovery CD.
4)
At the ‘Press R to display system recovery options’, press ‘R’.
5)
Once in the System Recovery screen, press ALT + D to access the WinPE command prompt as below:
6)
Type COPYSI and hit Enter. This will unhide the user's smartimage (this may take a few minutes to complete).
7)
Return to Windows® & copy the contents of the C:\Update CD\ folder to CD (N.B. Do not copy the ‘Update CD’ folder itself). Ask the user to label this ‘UPDATE CD’.
8)
Start with the recovery CD ROM in the CD drive.
9)
At the ‘Press R to display system recovery options’, press CTRL + BACKSPACE to get the hidden menu as below:
10)
Choose option:4 (Clear the partition table of drive 0x80). Once you have selcted this, you will be returned to the Press 'R' screen.
11)
Choose option:5 (Erase the Master Boot Record of drive 0x80). Once you have selcted this, you will be returned to the Press 'R' screen.
12)
Choose option:7 (Create a primary partition on drive 0x80). Do not restart the machine during this process. Option 7 may sit for up to 10 minutes with a flashing cursor as it creates the partition. If the HDD LED is flashing, then you know that the process is proceeding.
13)
Once the HDD partition has been created you will be returned to the ‘Press R to display system recovery options’ screen. Press ‘R’.
14)
The recovery should go straight into a full destructive recovery, and will ask for the update CD which we have created.

Hope this Helps.

Please feel free to ask further questions.

Hello,
You should install Ubuntu from inside Windows with the wubi program. When you boot you will have Windows as the default boot option and Ubuntu as a second option. Choose the Ubuntu installation to reside on the external drive. You will connect the drive if you use Ubuntu.

If you do not do that, reinstall ubuntu on the external drive and choose to write the boot sector for GRUB or LILO on the external drive, not on the MBR of the primary drive.
Hope it helps.
