OK we're gonna fix this problem using an invaluable tool built into Vista and XP. It's called Disk Management.First we need to get inside:

Accessing the Disk Management console tool

To access the Disk Management console tool in Windows Vista,
you can either right-click on My Computer and select the Manage command from
the context menu or you can access the Run dialog box, type Diskmgmt.msc,
    and click OK.

Once we're in you'll see a box like this:

You'll see your usb listed as one of the disks. Pay attention to the size, don't go deleting your hard drive!

Right-click the disk and then report back to me what options it gives you.

What drive letter has windows assigned it? If any.

    i.e. D: G: F: etc.

great. now let's get into the command prompt.

    Go to START, Programs, RUN

in the run box type: cmd

    press enter or click OK

A black box will pop up

    type this:

    format f:

If it works, great! If not we might have to add something.

    Let me know.

Vista is always a pain to use when it comes to formating these thumb drives. You don't happen to have an xp machine around, do you?

Pretty much the same steps, it's just that Vista for some reason isn't the greatest when it comes to Disk Management.

I used to have a Vista laptop and I'd always run into problems like this with it so I switched to XP but my laptop wasn't supported so I had to deal with a ton of driver issues.

It's like one problem after another, you know what I mean?

Finally I got fed up and switched to Ubuntu which has been like a Godsend. Every program is free and open source, no viruses, all of my drivers were automatically detected and installed correctly and it's fast and responsive.

Once in a while you run into a problem where you have to have XP or another operating system but there's an ubuntu program that let's you create a virtual os within ubuntu. So instead of dual-booting, I can use XP and Ubuntu at the same time and even share files between the two operating systems. It's really cool.

OK but as far as your problem goes let's just go ahead and try using your XP machine at work to format the drive.

Try formating the way you did before. In the meantime I'm going to throw a virtual copy of Vista on my machine too so that I won't forget how to use that stupid OS.

    Talk to ya soon,

you've got to add this to it

    /fs:fat32

    that will do the trick!

Do you know how to burn iso files?

  • RescueTechLA
    RescueTechLA Mar 02, 2009

What program do you use to burn cds on your computer?

  • RescueTechLA
    RescueTechLA Mar 03, 2009

    OK great.

Have you heard of Knoppix before?

    It's a live linux cd.

Basically what we're going to do is download and burn a copy of the program.

Afterwards we can boot your computer from the disc we made (it's independent of the hard drive so it won't affect anything)

Then we'll take care of that pesky thumb drive once and for all.

    Go HERE

There are a ton of places to get it, just pick one of the HTTP sites that's in English and close to you.

They're all pretty much the same. We just need to download the ISO file that's named like this:

    KNOPPIX_V6.0.1CD-2009-02-08-EN.iso

    Try this direct link first.
If that doesn't work just find the above from any of those sites listed.

Once you've downloaded the file, it's about 650mb so it will take a little bit of time, open Roxio and see if you can find something that says, "Burn Image File"

Then point Roxio to the file you just downloaded.

    Then burn.

Afterwards email me @ rescuetechla@gmail.com I'll email you back my phone number ( or email me yours- I've got free long distance) and we'll finish over the phone so it's easier for both of us.

Hi! thanks for using fixya.com!!!

I had the same problem before, from my side I tried so many times and so many attempts...
but you know, what I suggest that if its still under warranty it is better to return it to your dealer and tell them the problem...that's the same thing I did...Or just buy a new one...

Good luck!!!

Try it on an other computer... if that fails, it might have developed bad sectors (spots) reformat and do a scan, which writes and reads all memory locations... might be corrupted and/or broken, but try another computer first to make sure it is not a driver issue.

Hi!

You can try to format the flash drive first. Go to My Computer > Right click the flash drive and select Format. Once the format window opens, select Quick Format and click START. Please note that formatting your flash drive will wipe out all data.

I hope that helps.
