Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Don't panic, but I have a question about my 40 year old duo therm RV roof top AC. I know, it shouldn't be working, but it does. My problem is it will kick on, compressor starts to work and puts out cold air, then I hear the relay kicking out and it stops putting out cold air. This past fall I took the shroud off and cleaned everything and observed the operating system. Again, it starts, runs for a minute or so, than the relay opens. If I push on the relay, it will run again. A friend suggested a capacitor. Any ideas. I believe there are at least 3 capacitors in the unit, that I can see.

Hi. Thanks for the input. I will have to re-try it. If I remember correctly, it runs for awhile then opens again. If it is low on coolant, would it put out cold air like it does?

Hi. Thanks for the input. If I remember correctly, it would run for a little while and then open again. If the coolant is low, would it still be putting out cold air? I'll remove the shroud and try it again. Need to get #'s off unit.

Thanks, that makes sense to me. I will inquire as to re-charging the system. Thanks again, I sure didn't want to get into replacing capacitors, etc.

When you say relay I'm assuming the contactor. Does it shut off again when you let go of the contacts (relay)? Most likely it's low on refrigerant and the low pressure switch is shutting it down.

If it is low but not out of refrigerant then yes it may run for a short time and put out cool air. As it runs the refrigerant pressure would drop below the specified pressure and a low pressure control would interrupt the control voltage or voltage that tells the contacts to close and they would open again. It may happen that after the system is off for a period that the pressure rises again and the contacts will close and the cycle is repeated.

Can I recharge a Duo Therm 600315.001 RV Roof mounted air conditioner? It uses R22 refrigerant. If not, where can I find a replacement or can it be serviced somewhere?

I would suggest that you visit an ac specialist shop as all air conditioners( car, truck , house and yours all use the same principle of operation
because it is roof mounted in an RV may be a caravan repair shop that has an ac specialist in the workshop or a truck service shop that installs ac units in truck cabins would be a good place to start

Duo therm ac in my rv quit when the converter burned up does the ac need 12v to work?

there is a fuse located under the shroud on the roof AC on a circuit board that controls the thermostat to turn on the power to the Air Conditioner replace it it is marked F-1 or, on some F-2 etc.
the air conditioner works on both DC voltage for the thermostat and AC voltage for the compressor

RV AC is working fine, but the water is leaking from the ceiling Where is the drain tube on the unit, The AC unit is a roof type, Duo Therm serial # 43404934, Part # 3105459

Normally, the condensate will drain out of the unit onto the roof and off the edge to the ground. Remove your cover inside (probably 2 screws) and tighten the 4 bolts you will find inside. If they are tight, go to your RV supply place and get new roof gasket. Remove the AC and insert the new gasket and resecure the AC to your roof.

Duo Therm AC/Heating not working at all after tripped breaker.

I had to get on the roof of mine, remove the cover and manually spin the fan. Add a little oil to the shaft where it goes thru the bearing. All of this is done on the roof side. Mine required this procedure every spring. Duotherm realizes they had a problem and have since corrected it but they don't deal with all of their customers that had the original problem.
