I am trying to download movies off my friends portable hard drive onto my laptop but when I plug in my friends hard drive into my laptop, my laptop don't recognize it and nothing comes up???

Your laptop's usb port may not have enough power to keep the portable hard drive running.

You may require additional power to the portable hdd by using a usb cable with 2 usb connectors.
or use a USB port that is powered.

This is not a driver issue. Im assuming this is a passport. There could be a problem with the enclosure, however if it is a passport removing it from the enclosure will do you no good. More than likely there is a problem with the drive, possibly in the firm wear or a module. Either way it appears to be a hardware issue with the drive not your computer. USB plug and play should recognize it automatically without the need for drivers, especially if your device manager is recognizing it properly then the driver is not the issue.

External devices I am familiar with come with a installin CD and/or Plug and Play.

It should be a simple matter of plugging the USB cable into your computer and starting everything up.

If you need the installing CD, Please visit the manufacturers web site (you dont mention the make or model, or I would have given you the link)

Connect external hard disk IBM travel star 80GB USB port 2

Unless it's windows 98 you don't need a driver. If your computer can't see it, it's probably broken. Try plugging it in to another computer and see if it can see it
