I get a blue screen or it hangs on boot after I installed the Adaptec DirectCD software. I then tried to upgrade the firmware (to handle the new Direct CD software 2.0a patch) which didn't work. Error was "device not recognized as a flashable device". This drive is supposed to be compatible for the upgrade. My drive is a Philips CDD3610 RW from Hi-Val. I got it at CompUSA. My PC specs are Win98, 96RAM, 233 PII.
Tried it on the primary slave and secondary master with no luck. Also tried Hi-Val's tech support (which SUCKS bigtime) without any luck.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Obviously remove "-No-Spam" from my email address.

Thanks Sybren, I'm finally burnin' 'em!!! Turns out it was the Adaptec DirectCD software that was crappin' out my system. The writer came with DirectCD and Easy CD Creator 3.01b. I had assumed that I needed both pieces of software installed for the CDR to function, but I guess not. After I finally upgraded the firmware, then uninstalled DirectCD and Easy CD Creator, installed the drive again and then installed ONLY Easy CD Creator, poof!!! It worked!!! Thanks for all your help. Love this newgroup, I've learned a lot.

DirectCD is not a very good piece of software (understatement). Many people (including myself) have lost data without any notice while writing with DirectCD...you'll most certainly be better off with 'real' cdr software like Nero 3.0.5.1, CDRWin 3.5b, WinOnCD 3.5 or Easy CD Creator (deluxe) 3.01b (recommended in this order).
Packet Writing simply isn't ready for the market yet, no matter what Adaptec's advertisements say...
If all else fails, you could also reinstall Windows - a drastic measure but it has worked many times for me...solving seemingly unsolvable problems.

Thanks alot, your solution worked!! I appreciate it. I upgraded the firmware. I thought this would solve my problem, but it hasn't. I still get a blue screen near after or during boot up or just a plain freeze up soon after boot. I wonder if you have any other advice to help me get my drive working properly. I've turned off "insert notification" and tried many different configuration senerios. I'm starting think this might be a bad drive. I don't get the problem at boot up until I install the Adaptec DirectCD 2.0 software, I've also downloaded the 2.0a patch and installed that with the same result. If I don't install the software it's ok until I put a CD of anykind in the drive, then I get hung or the blue screen. Is there an alternative to DirectCD? This is my first drive, so I'm new at CD writing.
Thanks, Jeff
