Media Center Extender - size of download

By Bouncy - usenet poster

I am new user of XBox 360 as a Media Center Extender under Vista.

I am questioning how large the download will be to the XBox from the PC.
Will my entire music library and photo library be downloaded or just its
directories?

Secondly, assuming that new content falls within the directory structure
that was defined at the time of the initial download, will new material be
fully available when added, and will additional downloads be of only
additional/changed material?

I am asking because right now my Media Center is very slugish on the XBox,
and the activity between the XBox and PC is contstant (even if nothing is
running on Media Center at the time). I'm hoping that this is an indication
that the initial download is still taking place and that this will "calm
down" once the entire library has been downloaded (between my CDs and photos,
the whole library is about 70 gigabytes).

The .xex file that is uploaded to the Xbox 360 (and cached if you have a
hard drive) is only about 6 megs.

Everything else is done via streaming over the network.

That will certainly be the cause of your problem. I am using a pair of Netgear HDX101 Ethernet over
powerline devices to connect the Xbox 360 in the bedroom to the rest of the network. These work very
well with my house wiring. Make sure to upgrade to the latest firmware for your devices as I saw a
considerable improvement in network bandwidth with my devices after the firmware upgrade.

The amount of traffic is probably very small but frequent. It will just be handshaking from the Xbox
360 to the PC to confirm that each is still available.

Hi Nigel --

Cote d'Azur - Wow. I'm in Florida, but one of my favorite places in your
part of the world was both staying and eating at La Cagnard up on the hill in
Haute d Cagnes. Every try it? If not - you should.

Now to your questions. At first I tried a wireless connection, but that was
not a satisfactory experience, so I want to using a Netgear product that
allows me to use my house wiring to establish a wired connection. This is
what I've got. According to the performance tuner, I have unsatisfactory
connectivity (just one bar is lit up and it's red). I guess that may be the
problem, but I still don't understand why, even with no streaming going on,
i.e. no audio or pictures being shown - just the Media Center menu screen, I
have continuous traffic between the XBox and the PC. That is why I am asking
if something is going on in terms of something being downloaded (that seems
to be taking forever!!).

Cheers - and thanks.

Your content remains on your Media Center PC it is not copied to the Xbox 360. A Media Center
Extender will _Extend_ the view of the Media center to another screen.

It sounds like you may have network issues. How is the Xbox 360 connected to the Vista system? What
does the Media Center Extender Network Performance Tuner to confirm that your network is OK.
