Question about Computers & Internet

Wifi Switch I just puchased an acer aspire 5335-2238. There was no manual in the box and all I can find online is the ''quick guide'' I was using wifi until it told me I was not connected to wifi. The message told me here is a switch I need to change. Where is the switch. Is it a function key? I think I've tried all of them. Is there an actual switch on the laptop? Help please!

So just to clarify, is the issue that you cannot connect to the internet?

It may not be the switch itself, although it very well could be.

Some laptops, like Dell's for example have a Function key to use. If it is indeed a function key it will more than likely look like a radio tower with radio waves coming from it.

Like in the above link to the image, the image shows the F2 key showing the tower in blue. Holding the "Fn" Key and pressing the F2 key would in this case turn on the wireless.

That keyboard is for a Dell Inspiron notebook, yours may be in a different location, but I wanted to give you an idea for what to look for. If that doesn't work it may not be your wifi switch, but maybe something in the operating system.

Go to Start, All Programs, Empowering Technology, Acer eNet Management. If you have and Empowering Technology icon on your desktop you can click on that too.

This will open the Acer eNet Management main page.

Make sure your WLAN is set to ON.

Be sure to click on save if you change anything.

Usually there is an actual switch on the laptop.

Take a look all around the sides of the laptop. Sometimes it's in the front, sometimes on the side.

Just look very carefully and I"m sure you'll find it.

If not, let me know and I'll give you some other ideas.

Best of luck!

My guess is that it isn't the switch at all. It could be, but not a huge chance if you were able to connect for a while and then suddenly not. I believe what you are talking about is a troubleshooting tip that has no real idea whether or not your wireless is active. Use the suggestions above to determine if your wireless is active, but you might have to reset your router if your computer suddenly doesn't connect to it, when it did before. You could also try connecting to another wireless router, maybe at a friends house or coffee shop.

You can check to see if the wifi drivers are still installed. Try to reinstall the drivers. If there good look for a switch or button the controls the wifi on or off. If switch or button doesn't work then it may be bad and need replacement.
Here is the manual

How to get wifi on acer aspire 1390 wireless

Acording to the Manual
http://www.manualslib.com/manual/1156/Acer-Aspire-1360-Series.html?page=7#manual
that is a 2004 unit the best way is to go to the Control Panel, click Device Manager, rt click the wifi adapter and update the drivers on line. (takes awhile) Microsoft will auto install the correct driver. If you cannot see the wifi in your device mgr. Purch a USB wifi adapter from Tigerdirect an install that. Should be able to fix for less that $25. If it still has Windows XP on this PC you should not be on the internet with it, it is totally vulnerable to viruses & hacking.

If it is three days old and no wifi you may not want to read this...;-]

There is a off on switch for the wifi either in front or along the side of the case. By default it is off. The wifi will show installed and working but won;t do anything. The hard part is finding that stupid switch. Followed by pretending you knew it was the problem all along. I'm chuckling at this as everyone myself included has done this. If it is anything other than the switch on a 3 day old laptop I'd put in in the box and return it.

it's the switch ;-]

I have an aspire 6530 which suddenly will now not allow me to go online. It asks for wifi switch to be turned on but there is no switch on this laptop. Can anyone help?

Mike:
I would usually research this information on the acer.com website; however, their website is decidedly broken right now.
One thing you might check is whether or not there is a Fn key combination that you can press on the keyboard to switch-on the WiFi.
Look on the keyboard for a colored key labelled something like "Fn" and the press and hold that down while you press one of the other keys that has an antenna or radiating computer icon on it.
That should toggle the WiFi radio back on for you.
Sorry that I could not be more specific, but until Acer's web site comes back up again, this is the best that I can do.
Thanks for using FixYa
