Hi,
I have an old IBM 8595 PS/2 Server, and am currently trying to add a cd-rom
drive (a Panasonic CW-7502-B writer). I had some trouble getting the thing
to work, and after some experimenting, came to the conclusion that it only
worked if I disconnected one of my hard drives; a Quantum Fireball SE 2.1 GB
(which always worked fine). If I have that drive connected, the "busy" light
on the cd-rom drive is lit up all the time, and it isn't detected at all in
the bios; if I disconnect the drive everything works fine, and I can use the
drive in dos. My scsi configuration is:
Host: ID 7 / Terminated
Cd-rom drive: ID 3
Quantum Fireball: ID 4
IBM 1 GB: ID 5
IBM 160 MB: ID 6 / Terminated
Does anyone have a clue of what could be wrong? Are there any obscure jumper
settings I have to set?
Thanks,
Menno

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who's had to
deal with this problem. I've had some issues with this drive before with
another scsi host, but as soon as I got it to work it's always served me
fine, and for an oldie like this IBM, it should be fine. My other, newer,
scsi drive refused to work at all (in fact; it would stop booting and give
me an iml error), so I'm quite determined to get this thing to work.
For your suggestion; I have the original external terminator right in front
of me on my desk, but I don't have any external enclosures, so I'm out of
luck there. I am going to try and shuffle the termination around a bit, and
see if that changes anything. I also downloaded what looks like a firmware
update for this drive. Anway, I'll keep you posted

attached externally to my old "FrankenClone" 550MHz AMD K6-2 system.
Internally, I had a 2GB IBM SCSI hard drive (DCAS, I think) and an IBM
DDS2 tape drive. Externally, I originally had an IBM R/W Optical
drive which used the 1.2GB double-sided media. Then I tried to attach
the Panasonic CD-writer after the optical drive -- no joy, I got the
same solid BUSY light you are seeing. After playing around with it
for quite some time, I found that I could use the Panasonic if it was
the only external device *and* I used the "proper" terminator. The
IBM Optical drive was perfectly happy with any of the 3 different
external SCSI terminators I had in my stock, the Panasonic would only
work with the IBM FRU 92F0057 terminator. The Panasonic was a fussy
beast, I'm glad that I'm not dealing with it anymore.

internal devices, or only using external devices, the 'ends' are the end
of the cable, and the host. If you are using internal AND external
devices, you terminate the end of the internal cable, the end of the
external cable but NOT the host.
Unless the host is actually a dual-bus one, or course.

IMO you shouldn't terminate 2 devices; terminate the host or the last device
on the cable.
But there is more expertise here in the group

IIRC, the Panasonic has one additional jumper, something labelled with "worm" or somesuch. Try in another position. The jumper in question is the one that looks kinda out-of-place, it has nothing to do with the id or termination, I think it had to be set to non-worm for the drive to function correctly.
Also, I think the one cd-r that has so far refused to run under linux has been the cw-7502. The last statement is something I would not like to bet my life on, I just think the previous cd-r that was stuck in my 320 just happened to be a 7502. Of course I could dig the drive out from its hideout to check what drive it actually is but I am too lazy at the moment ;)
