pretty sure there is no phone out - you will need a jack diplexor (splitter)

this will split your line at the jack.

One line to your phone, one to the all-in-one.

Im DYING to know where you found the jack.

Because your unit was so old, it wasnt listed on lexmark's site.

So i went with the nearest model # to yours. (x83)

Also, are you SURE you wanted to rate my answer Inappropriate?

This type of rating is reserved for answers about different topics than the question (ex - if I answered your All-in-one question with a radio answer), vulgar, abusive, or inappropriate language... or where the solution had nothing to do with the problem.

Please reconsider raising the rating - as a "thanks for trying" severely lowers our percentage rating.

Most experts do not even attempt to answer free questions because of askers giving ratings like this.

Some is the fault of FixYa not wording the rating correctly. IMO there should be - INAPPROPRIATE, NOT HELPFUL, HELPFUL, AND FIXYA.

While the answer may not be a "fixya" in your case, I took the time to answer your question and a "helpful" rating is not detremental and appreciated.

    Thank you.

Off the hook

A "Phone Off Hook" message is not an error. It simply indicates that a telephone receiver isoff the hook(the handset is lifted) and the telephone line is open. This message would be expected in the following situations:
  • A modem on the phone line is accessing the Internet.
  • A phone connected to the HP fax (or the same phone line) is using the line, or the handset has been lifted.
  • A credit card machine is using the phone line.
  • Another electronic device is using the phone line.
  • The Start Fax button was pressed with no telephone number entered. Pressing Stop or Cancel should return the display to a ready state.
When the other device is no longer using the phone line, the display should revert to the normal message.
Lets try the following,
Disconnect the phone cable from the back of the HP product and the message should clear. If the message does not clear, unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 15 seconds, and then plug in the power cable.
if issue still exists try the followign
Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable. If a dial tone is still not present, a problem exists with the phone system.

Cannot receive faxes

The storm has likely damaged the phone line, or the ADSL microfilter (if you have one). Which is why it thinks a phone on the fax line is off the hook. Check your line for breaks and your ADSL filters for a blown filter.

No dial tone pressing hook, NG and Poor line condition transmission report on sending and receiving. Confirmed good dial tone on line in and on phone on ext. Copy, display, everything else fine. I hear...

Hello,

Make sure that you have your telephone line from the wall jack plugged into the port on the fax that says "LINE" and that your telephone is plugged into EXT.

All your cables and jacks seem like they are working since your phone gets a dial tone, the onyl thing could be that the wires are mixed or the modem on the fax is broken.

Thanks,

Pat

Machine shows "phone off hook"

Hi there

check where your phone cale goes into the machine you will proberbly find two sockets one marked phone and one marked line the phone line needs to go into the one marked line and a phone handset in the one marked phone if this is correct try ringing yor line that the fax is plugged into see if you get a ring or engaged tone if you are getting engaged unplug the fax and try again if this now works the chance is that the modem board in your fax has failed and will require replaceing

My hp officejet v40xi says off hook when I try to send a fax. I hear not dial tone. can you help me I am using sbcglobal service

It will say 'off the hook' if the line is in use. There should be dial tone on the line before you can fax something.

Goodluck!

Hooking up mx310 all in one

The phone line should plug directly into the Line plug on the DSL modem and the all-in-one should plug into the Phone plug next to it. If you need to split the line do it AFTER the line comes out of the Phone plug.

CAN'T GET FAX WORKING.

If it's answering on your main number, then you are not plugged into the fax jack. You should have a separate phone jack for fax. If you have internet phone there should be a second jack on the back of your phone box. You can test that you have a functioning second line by plugging the fax into it and using the fax unit to dial your home number.
